HYMN XLIL INDRA-VARUṆA.


ममmama दविताdvitā राष्ट्रंrāṣṭraṃ कषत्रियस्यkṣatriyasya विश्वायोरviśvāyor विश्वेviśve अम्र्ताamṛtā यथाyathā नःnaḥ |

करतुंkratuṃ सचन्तेsacante वरुणस्यvaruṇasya देवाdevā राजामिrājāmi कर्ष्टेरkṛṣṭer उपमस्यupamasya वव्रेःvavreḥ ||

I AM the royal Ruler, mine is empire, as mine who sway all life are all Immortals.
Varuṇa's will the Gods obey and follow. I am the King of men's most lofty cover.
4.42.1

अहंahaṃ राजाrājā वरुणोvaruṇo मह्यंmahyaṃ तान्यtāny असुर्याणिasuryāṇi परथमाprathamā धारयन्तdhārayanta |

करतुंkratuṃ सचन्तेsacante वरुणस्यvaruṇasya देवाdevā राजामिrājāmi कर्ष्टेरkṛṣṭer उपमस्यupamasya वव्रेःvavreḥ ||

I am King Varuṇa. To me were given these first existing high celestial powers.
Varuṇa's will the Gods obey and follow. I am the King of men's most lofty cover.
4.42.2

अहमaham इन्द्रोindro वरुणसvaruṇas तेte महित्वोर्वीmahitvorvī गभीरेghabhīre रजसीrajasī सुमेकेsumeke |

तवष्टेवtvaṣṭeva विश्वाviśvā भुवनानिbhuvanāni विद्वानvidvān समsam ऐरयंairayaṃ रोदसीrodasī धारयंdhārayaṃ चca ||

I Varuṇa am Indra: in their greatness, these the two wide deep fairly-fashioned regions,
These the two world-halves have I, even as Tvaṣṭar knowing all beings, joined and held together.
4.42.3

अहमaham अपोapo अपिन्वमapinvam उक्षमाणाukṣamāṇā धारयंdhārayaṃ दिवंdivaṃ सदनsadana रतस्यṛtasya |

रतेनṛtena पुत्रोputro अदितेरaditer रतावोतṛtāvota तरिधातुtridhātu परथयदprathayad विvi भूमbhūma ||

I made to flow the moisture-shedding waters, and set the heaven firm in the scat of Order.
By Law the Son of Aditi, Law Observer, hath spread abroad the world in threefold measure.
4.42.4

मांmāṃ नरःnaraḥ सवश्वाsvaśvā वाजयन्तोvājayanto मांmāṃ वर्ताःvṛtāḥ समरणेsamaraṇe हवन्तेhavante |

कर्णोम्यkṛṇomy आजिमājim मघवाहमmaghavāham इन्द्रindra इयर्मिiyarmi रेणुमreṇum अभिभूत्योजाःabhibhūtyojāḥ ||

Heroes with noble horses, fain for battle, selected warriors, call on me in combat.
I Indra Maghavan, excite the conflict; I stir the dust, Lord of surpassing vigour.
4.42.5

अहंahaṃ ताtā विश्वाviśvā चकरंcakaraṃ नकिरnakir माmā दैव्यंdaivyaṃ सहोsaho वरतेvarate अप्रतीतमapratītam |

यनyan माmā सोमासोsomāso ममदनmamadan यदyad उक्थोभेukthobhe भयेतेbhayete रजसीrajasī अपारेapāre ||

All this I did. The Gods’ own conquering power never impedeth me whom none opposeth.
When lauds and Soma juice have made me joyful, both the unbounded regions are affrighted.
4.42.6

विदुषviduṣ तेte विश्वाviśvā भुवनानिbhuvanāni तस्यtasya ताtā परpra बरवीषिbravīṣi वरुणायvaruṇāya वेधःvedhaḥ |

तवंtvaṃ वर्त्राणिvṛtrāṇi शर्ण्विषेśṛṇviṣe जघन्वानjaghanvān तवंtvaṃ वर्तांvṛtāṃ अरिणाariṇā इन्द्रindra सिन्धूनsindhūn ||

All beings know these deeds of thine thou tellest this unto Varuṇa, thou great Disposer!
Thou art renowned as having slain the Vṛtras. Thou madest flow the floods that were obstructed.
4.42.7

अस्माकमasmākam अत्रatra पितरसpitaras तta आसनāsan सप्तsapta रषयोṛṣayo दौर्गहेdaurghahe बध्यमानेbadhyamāne |

तta आयजन्तāyajanta तरसदस्युमtrasadasyum अस्याasyā इन्द्रंindraṃ नna वर्त्रतुरमvṛtraturam अर्धदेवमardhadevam ||

Our fathers then were these, the Seven his, what time the son of Durgaha was captive.
For her they gained by sacrifice Trasadasyu, a demi-god, like Indra, conquering foemen.
4.42.8

पुरुकुत्सानीpurukutsānī हिhi वामvām अदाशदadāśad धव्येभिरdhavyebhir इन्द्रावरुणाindrāvaruṇā नमोभिःnamobhiḥ |

अथाathā राजानंrājānaṃ तरसदस्युमtrasadasyum अस्याasyā वर्त्रहणंvṛtrahaṇaṃ ददथुरdadathur अर्धदेवमardhadevam ||

The spouse of Purukutsa gave oblations to you, O Indra-Varuṇa, with homage.
Then unto her ye gave King Trasadasyu, the demi-god, the slayer of the foeman.
4.42.9

रायाrāyā वयंvayaṃ ससवांसोsasavāṃso मदेमmadema हव्येनhavyena देवाdevā यवसेनyavasena गावःghāvaḥ |

तांtāṃ धेनुमdhenum इन्द्रावरुणाindrāvaruṇā युवंyuvaṃ नोno विश्वाहाviśvāhā धत्तमdhattam अनपस्फुरन्तीमanapasphurantīm ||

May we, possessing much, delight in riches, Gods in oblations and the kine in pasture;
And that Milch-cow who shrinks not from the milking, O Indra-Varuṇa, give to us daily.
