HYMN L. BṚHASPATI.


यसyas तस्तम्भtastambha सहसाsahasā विvi जमोjmo अन्तानantān बर्हस्पतिसbṛhaspatis तरिषधस्थोtriṣadhastho रवेणraveṇa |

तमtam परत्नासpratnāsa रषयोṛṣayo दीध्यानाःdīdhyānāḥ पुरोpuro विप्राviprā दधिरेdadhire मन्द्रजिह्वमmandrajihvam ||

Him who with might hath propped earth's ends, who sitteth in threefold seat, Bṛhaspati, with thunder,
Him of the pleasant tongue have ancient sages, deep-thinking, holy singers, set before them.
4.50.1

धुनेतयःdhunetayaḥ सुप्रकेतमsupraketam मदन्तोmadanto बर्हस्पतेbṛhaspate अभिabhi येye नसnas ततस्रेtatasre |

पर्षन्तंpṛṣantaṃ सर्प्रमsṛpram अदब्धमadabdham ऊर्वमūrvam बर्हस्पतेbṛhaspate रक्षतादrakṣatād अस्यasya योनिमyonim ||

Wild in their course, in well-marked wise rejoicing were they, Bṛhaspati, who pressed around us.
Preserve Bṛhaspati, the stall uninjured, this company's raining, ever-moving birthplace.
4.50.2

बर्हस्पतेbṛhaspate याyā परमाparamā परावदparāvad अतata आā तta रतस्प्र्शोṛtaspṛśo निni षेदुःṣeduḥ |

तुभ्यंtubhyaṃ खाताkhātā अवताavatā अद्रिदुग्धाadridughdhā मध्वmadhva शचोतन्त्यścotanty अभितोabhito विरप्शमvirapśam ||

Bṛhaspati, from thy remotest distance have they sat down who love the law eternal.
For thee were dug wells springing from the mountain, which murmuring round about pour streams of sweetness.
4.50.3

बर्हस्पतिःbṛhaspatiḥ परथमंprathamaṃ जायमानोjāyamāno महोmaho जयोतिषःjyotiṣaḥ परमेparame वयोमनvyoman |

सप्तास्यसsaptāsyas तुविजातोtuvijāto रवेणraveṇa विvi सप्तरश्मिरsaptaraśmir अधमतadhamat तमांसिtamāṃsi ||

Bṛhaspati, when first he had his being from mighty splendour in supremest heaven,
Strong, with his sevenfold mouth, with noise of thunder, with his seven rays, blew and dispersed the darkness.
4.50.4

सsa सुष्टुभाsuṣṭubhā सsa रक्वताṛkvatā गणेनghaṇena वलंvalaṃ रुरोजruroja फलिगंphalighaṃ रवेणraveṇa |

बर्हस्पतिरbṛhaspatir उस्रियाusriyā हव्यसूदःhavyasūdaḥ कनिक्रददkanikradad वावशतीरvāvaśatīr उदud आजतājat ||

With the loud-shouting band who sang his praises, with thunder, he destroyed obstructive Vala.
Bṛhaspati thundering drave forth the cattle, the lowing cows who make oblations ready.
4.50.5

एवाevā पित्रेpitre विश्वदेवायviśvadevāya वर्ष्णेvṛṣṇe यज्ञैरyajñair विधेमvidhema नमसाnamasā हविर्भिःhavirbhiḥ |

बर्हस्पतेbṛhaspate सुप्रजाsuprajā वीरवन्तोvīravanto वयंvayaṃ सयामsyāma पतयोpatayo रयीणामrayīṇām ||

Serve we with sacrifices, gifts, and homage even thus the Steer of all the Gods, the Father.
Bṛhaspati, may we be lords of riches, with noble progeny and store of heroes.
4.50.6

सsa इदid राजाrājā परतिजन्यानिpratijanyāni विश्वाviśvā शुष्मेणśuṣmeṇa तस्थावtasthāv अभिabhi वीर्य्णvīryṇa |

बर्हस्पतिंbṛhaspatiṃ यःyaḥ सुभ्र्तमsubhṛtam बिभर्तिbibharti वल्गूयतिvalghūyati वन्दतेvandate पूर्वभाजमpūrvabhājam ||

Surely that King by power and might heroic hath made him lord of all his foes' posses-ions,
Who cherishes Bṛhaspati well-tended, adorns and worships him as foremost sharer.
4.50.7

सsa इतit कषेतिkṣeti सुधितsudhita ओकसिokasi सवेsve तस्माtasmā इळाiḷā पिन्वतेpinvate विश्वदानीमviśvadānīm |

तस्मैtasmai विशःviśaḥ सवयमsvayam एवाevā नमन्तेnamante यस्मिनyasmin बरह्माbrahmā राजनिrājani पूर्वpūrva एतिeti ||

In his own house he dwells in peace and comfort: to him for ever holy food flows richly.
To him the people with free will pay homage-the King with whom the Brahman hath precedence.
4.50.8

अप्रतीतोapratīto जयतिjayati संsaṃ धनानिdhanāni परतिजन्यान्यpratijanyāny उतuta याyā सजन्याsajanyā |

अवस्यवेavasyave योyo वरिवःvarivaḥ कर्णोतिkṛṇoti बरह्मणेbrahmaṇe राजाrājā तमtam अवन्तिavanti देवाःdevāḥ ||

He, unopposed, is master of the riches of his own subjects and of hostile people.
The Gods uphold that King with their protection who helps the Brahman when he seeks his favour.
4.50.9

इन्द्रशindraś चca सोममsomam पिबतमpibatam बर्हस्पतेbṛhaspate ऽसमिन'smin यज्ञेyajñe मन्दसानाmandasānā वर्षण्वसूvṛṣaṇvasū |

आā वांvāṃ विशन्त्वviśantv इन्दवःindavaḥ सवाभुवोsvābhuvo ऽसमे'sme रयिंrayiṃ सर्ववीरंsarvavīraṃ निni यछतमyachatam ||

Indra, Bṛhaspati, rainers of treasure, rejoicing at this sacrifice drink the Soma.
Let the abundant drops sink deep within you: vouchsafe us riches with full store of heroes.
4.50.10

बर्हस्पतbṛhaspata इन्द्रindra वर्धतंvardhataṃ नःnaḥ सचाsacā साsā वांvāṃ सुमतिरsumatir भूत्वbhūtv अस्मेasme |

अविष्टंaviṣṭaṃ धियोdhiyo जिग्र्तमjighṛtam पुरंधीरpuraṃdhīr जजस्तमjajastam अर्योaryo वनुषामvanuṣām अरातीःarātīḥ ||

Bṛhaspati and Indra, make us prosper may this be your benevolence to us-ward.
Assist our holy thoughts, wake up our spirit: weaken the hatred of our foe and rivals.
