HYMN XI. AGNI.


जनस्यjanasya गोपाghopā अजनिष्टajaniṣṭa जाग्र्विरjāghṛvir अग्निःaghniḥ सुदक्षःsudakṣaḥ सुवितायsuvitāya नव्यसेnavyase |

घर्तप्रतीकोghṛtapratīko बर्हताbṛhatā दिविस्प्र्शाdivispṛśā दयुमदdyumad विvi भातिbhāti भरतेभ्यःbharatebhyaḥ शुचिःśuciḥ ||

THE watchful Guardian of the people hath been born, Agni, the very strong, for fresh prosperity.
With oil upon his face, with high heaven-touching flame, he shineth splendidly, pure, for the Bharatas.
5.11.1

यज्ञस्यyajñasya केतुमketum परथममprathamam पुरोहितमpurohitam अग्निंaghniṃ नरसnaras तरिषधस्थेtriṣadhasthe समsam ईधिरेīdhire |

इन्द्रेणindreṇa देवैःdevaiḥ सरथंsarathaṃ सsa बर्हिषिbarhiṣi सीदनsīdan निni होताhotā यजथायyajathāya सुक्रतुःsukratuḥ ||

Ensign of sacrifice, the earliest Household-Priest, the men have kindled Agni in his threefold seat,
With Indra and the Gods together on the grass let the wise Priest sit to complete the sacrifice.
5.11.2

असम्म्र्ष्टोasammṛṣṭo जायसेjāyase मात्रोःmātroḥ शुचिरśucir मन्द्रःmandraḥ कविरkavir उदud अतिष्ठोatiṣṭho विवस्वतःvivasvataḥ |

घर्तेनghṛtena तवावर्धयन्नtvāvardhayann अग्नaghna आहुतāhuta धूमसdhūmas तेte केतुरketur अभवदabhavad दिविdivi शरितःśritaḥ ||

Pure , unadorned, from thy two Mothers art thou born: thou camest from Vivasvān as a charming Sage.
With oil they strengthened thee, O Agni, worshipped God: thy banner was the smoke that mounted to the sky.
5.11.3

अग्निरaghnir नोno यज्ञमyajñam उपupa वेतुvetu साधुयाग्निंsādhuyāghniṃ नरोnaro विvi भरन्तेbharante गर्हे-गर्हेghṛhe-ghṛhe |

अग्निरaghnir दूतोdūto अभवदabhavad धव्यवाहनोdhavyavāhano ऽगनिं'ghniṃ वर्णानाvṛṇānā वर्णतेvṛṇate कविक्रतुमkavikratum ||

May Agni graciously come to our sacrifice. The men bear Agni here and there in every house.
He hath become an envoy, bearer of our gifts: electing Agni, men choose one exceeding wise.
5.11.4

तुभ्येदमtubhyedam अग्नेaghne मधुमत्तमंmadhumattamaṃ वचसvacas तुभ्यमtubhyam मनीषाmanīṣā इयमiyam अस्तुastu शंśaṃ हर्देhṛde |

तवांtvāṃ गिरःghiraḥ सिन्धुमsindhum इवावनीरivāvanīr महीरmahīr आā पर्णन्तिpṛṇanti शवसाśavasā वर्धयन्तिvardhayanti चca ||

For thee, O Agni, is this sweetest prayer of mine: dear to thy spirit be this product of my thought.
As great streams fill the river so our song of praise fill thee, and make thee yet more mighty in thy strength.
5.11.5

तवामtvām अग्नेaghne अङगिरसोaṅghiraso गुहाghuhā हितमhitam अन्वanv अविन्दञavindañ छिश्रियाणंchiśriyāṇaṃ वनेvane वनेvane |

सsa जायसेjāyase मथ्यमानःmathyamānaḥ सहोsaho महतmahat तवामtvām आहुःāhuḥ सहससsahasas पुत्रमputram अङगिरःaṅghiraḥ ||

O Agni, the Aṅgirases discovered thee what time thou layest hidden, fleeing back from wood to wood.
Thou by attrition art produced as conquering might, and men, O Aṅgiras, call thee the Son of Strength.
