HYMN XVIII. AGNI.


परातरprātar अग्निःaghniḥ पुरुप्रियोpurupriyo विशviśa सतवेतातिथिःstavetātithiḥ |

विश्वानिviśvāni योyo अमर्त्योamartyo हव्याhavyā मर्तेषुmarteṣu रण्यतिraṇyati ||

AT dawn let Agni, much-beloved guest of the house, be glorified;
Immortal who delights in all oblations brought by mortal men.
5.18.1

दवितायdvitāya मर्क्तवाहसेmṛktavāhase सवस्यsvasya दक्षस्यdakṣasya मंहनाmaṃhanā |

इन्दुंinduṃ सsa धत्तdhatta आनुषकānuṣak सतोताstotā चितcit तेte अमर्त्यamartya ||

For Dvita who receives through wealth of native strength maimed offerings,
Thy praiser even gains at once the Soma-drops, Immortal Gods!
5.18.2

तंtaṃ वोvo दीर्घायुशोचिषंdīrghāyuśociṣaṃ गिराghirā हुवेhuve मघोनामmaghonām |

अरिष्टोariṣṭo येषांyeṣāṃ रथोratho वयvy अश्वदावन्नaśvadāvann ईयतेīyate ||

Nobles, with song I call that car of yours that shines with lengthened life,
For, God who givest steeds! that car hither and thither goes unharmed.
5.18.3

चित्राcitrā वाvā येषुyeṣu दीधितिरdīdhitir आसन्नāsann उक्थाukthā पान्तिpānti येye |

सतीर्णमstīrṇam बर्हिःbarhiḥ सवर्णरेsvarṇare शरवांसिśravāṃsi दधिरेdadhire परिpari ||

They who have varied ways of thought, who guard the lauds within their lips,
And strew the grass before the light, have decked themselves with high renown.
5.18.4

येye मेme पञ्चाशतंpañcāśataṃ ददुरdadur अश्वानांaśvānāṃ सधस्तुतिsadhastuti |

दयुमदdyumad अग्नेaghne महिmahi शरवोśravo बर्हतbṛhat कर्धिkṛdhi मघोनांmaghonāṃ नर्वदnṛvad अम्र्तamṛta नर्णामnṛṇām ||

Immortal Agni, give the chiefs, heroes who institute the rite,
Heroes’ illustrious, lofty fame, who at the synod met for praise presented me with fifty steeds.
