HYMN IV. AGNI.


तवामtvām अग्नेaghne वसुपतिंvasupatiṃ वसूनामvasūnām अभिabhi परpra मन्देmande अध्वरेषुadhvareṣu राजनrājan |

तवयाtvayā वाजंvājaṃ वाजयन्तोvājayanto जयेमाभिjayemābhi षयामṣyāma पर्त्सुतीरpṛtsutīr मर्त्यानामmartyānām ||

O AGNI, King and Lord of wealth and treasures, in thee is my delight at sacrifices.
Through thee may we obtain the strength we long for, and overcome the fierce attacks of mortals.
5.4.1

हव्यवाळhavyavāḷ अग्निरaghnir अजरःajaraḥ पिताpitā नोno विभुरvibhur विभावाvibhāvā सुद्र्शीकोsudṛśīko अस्मेasme |

सुगार्हपत्याःsughārhapatyāḥ समsam इषोiṣo दिदीह्यdidīhy अस्मद्र्यकasmadryak समsam मिमीहिmimīhi शरवांसिśravāṃsi ||

Agni, Eternal Father, offering-bearer, fair to behold, far-reaching, far-refulgent,
From well-kept household fire beam food to feed us, and measure out to us abundant glory.
5.4.2

विशांviśāṃ कविंkaviṃ विश्पतिमviśpatim मानुषीणांmānuṣīṇāṃ शुचिमśucim पावकंpāvakaṃ घर्तप्र्ष्ठमghṛtapṛṣṭham अग्निमaghnim |

निni होतारंhotāraṃ विश्वविदंviśvavidaṃ दधिध्वेdadhidhve सsa देवेषुdeveṣu वनतेvanate वार्याणिvāryāṇi ||

The Sage of men, the Lord of human races, pure, purifying Agni, balmed with butter,
Him the Omniscient as your Priest ye stablish: he wins among the Gods things worth the choosing.
5.4.3

जुषस्वाग्नjuṣasvāghna इळयाiḷayā सजोषाsajoṣā यतमानोyatamāno रश्मिभिःraśmibhiḥ सूर्यस्यsūryasya |

जुषस्वjuṣasva नःnaḥ समिधंsamidhaṃ जातवेदjātaveda आā चca देवानdevān हविरद्यायhaviradyāya वक्षिvakṣi ||

Agni, enjoy, of one accord with Iḷā, striving in rivalry with beams of Sūrya,
Enjoy, O Jātavedas, this our fuel, and bring the Gods to us to taste oblations.
5.4.4

जुष्टोjuṣṭo दमूनाdamūnā अतिथिरatithir दुरोणduroṇa इमंimaṃ नोno यज्ञमyajñam उपupa याहिyāhi विद्वानvidvān |

विश्वाviśvā अग्नेaghne अभियुजोabhiyujo विहत्याvihatyā शत्रूयतामśatrūyatām आā भराbharā भोजनानिbhojanāni ||

As dear House-Friend, guest welcome in the dwelling, to this our sacrifice come thou who knowest.
And, Agni, having scattered all assailants, bring to us the possessions of our foemen.
5.4.5

वधेनvadhena दस्युमdasyum परpra हिhi चातयस्वcātayasva वयःvayaḥ कर्ण्वानसkṛṇvānas तन्वेtanve सवायैsvāyai |

पिपर्षिpiparṣi यतyat सहससsahasas पुत्रputra देवान्तdevānt सोso अग्नेaghne पाहिpāhi नर्तमnṛtama वाजेvāje अस्मानasmān ||

Drive thou away the Dasyu with thy weapon. As, gaining vital power for thine own body,
O Son of Strength, the Gods thou satisfiest, so in fight save us, most heroic Agni.
5.4.6

वयंvayaṃ तेte अग्नaghna उक्थैरukthair विधेमvidhema वयंvayaṃ हव्यैःhavyaiḥ पावकpāvaka भद्रशोचेbhadraśoce |

अस्मेasme रयिंrayiṃ विश्ववारंviśvavāraṃ समsam इन्वास्मेinvāsme विश्वानिviśvāni दरविणानिdraviṇāni धेहिdhehi ||

May we, O Agni, with our lauds adore thee, and with our gifts, fair-beaming Purifier!
Send to us wealth containing all things precious: bestow upon us every sort of riches.
5.4.7

अस्माकमasmākam अग्नेaghne अध्वरंadhvaraṃ जुषस्वjuṣasva सहसःsahasaḥ सूनोsūno तरिषधस्थtriṣadhastha हव्यमhavyam |

वयंvayaṃ देवेषुdeveṣu सुक्र्तःsukṛtaḥ सयामsyāma शर्मणाśarmaṇā नसnas तरिवरूथेनtrivarūthena पाहिpāhi ||

Son of Strength, Agni, dweller in three regions, accept our sacrifice and our oblation.
Among the Gods may we be counted pious: protect us with a triply-guarding shelter.
5.4.8

विश्वानिviśvāni नोno दुर्गहाdurghahā जातवेदःjātavedaḥ सिन्धुंsindhuṃ नna नावाnāvā दुरितातिduritāti पर्षिparṣi |

अग्नेaghne अत्रिवनatrivan नमसाnamasā गर्णानोghṛṇāno ऽसमाकम'smākam बोध्यbodhy अविताavitā तनूनामtanūnām ||

Over all woes and dangers, Jātavedas, bear us as in a boat across a river.
Praised with our homage even as Atri praised thee, O Agni, be the guardian of our bodies.
5.4.9

यसyas तवाtvā हर्दाhṛdā कीरिणाkīriṇā मन्यमानोmanyamāno ऽमर्त्यम'martyam मर्त्योmartyo जोहवीमिjohavīmi |

जातवेदोjātavedo यशोyaśo अस्मासुasmāsu धेहिdhehi परजाभिरprajābhir अग्नेaghne अम्र्तत्वमamṛtatvam अश्यामaśyām ||

As I, remembering thee with grateful spirit, a mortal, call with might on thee Immortal,
Vouchsafe us high renown, O Jātavedas, and may I be immortal by my children.
5.4.10

यस्मैyasmai तवंtvaṃ सुक्र्तेsukṛte जातवेदjātaveda उलोकमulokam अग्नेaghne कर्णवःkṛṇavaḥ सयोनमsyonam |

अश्विनंaśvinaṃ सsa पुत्र्णंputṛṇaṃ वीरवन्तंvīravantaṃ गोमन्तंghomantaṃ रयिंrayiṃ नशतेnaśate सवस्तिsvasti ||

The pious man, O Jātavedas Agni, to whom thou grantest ample room and pleasure,
Gaineth abundant wealth with sons and horses, with heroes and with kine for his well-being.
