HYMN LXI. MARUTS.


केke षठाṣṭhā नरःnaraḥ शरेष्ठतमाśreṣṭhatamā यya एक-एकeka-eka आययāyaya |

परमस्याःparamasyāḥ परावतःparāvataḥ ||

O HEROES lordliest of all, who are ye that have singly come
Forth from a region most remote?
5.61.1

कवkva वोvo ऽशवाः'śvāḥ कव्र्भीशवःkvṛbhīśavaḥ कथंkathaṃ शेकśeka कथाkathā ययyaya |

पर्ष्ठेpṛṣṭhe सदोsado नसोरnasor यमःyamaḥ ||

Where are your horses, where the reins? How came ye? how had ye the power?
Rein was on nose and seat on back.
5.61.2

जघनेjaghane चोदcoda एषांeṣāṃ विvi सक्थानिsakthāni नरोnaro यमुःyamuḥ |

पुत्रक्र्थेputrakṛthe नna जनयःjanayaḥ ||

The whip is laid upon the flank. The heroes stretch their thighs apart,
Like women when the babe is born.
5.61.3

पराparā वीरासvīrāsa एतनetana मर्यासोmaryāso भद्रजानयःbhadrajānayaḥ |

अग्नितपोaghnitapo यथासथyathāsatha ||

Go ye, O Heroes, far away, ye bridegrooms with a lovely Spouse
That ye may warm you at the fire.
5.61.4

सनतsanat साश्व्यमsāśvyam पशुमpaśum उतuta गव्यंghavyaṃ शतावयमśatāvayam |

शयावाश्वस्तुतायśyāvāśvastutāya याyā दोरdor वीरायोपबर्ब्र्हतvīrāyopabarbṛhat ||

May she gain cattle for her meed, hundreds of sheep and steeds and kine,
Who threw embracing arms around the hero whom gyavaiva praised.
5.61.5

उतuta तवाtvā सत्रीstrī शशीयसीśaśīyasī पुंसोpuṃso भवतिbhavati वस्यसीvasyasī |

अदेवत्रादadevatrād अराधसःarādhasaḥ ||

Yea, many a woman is more firm and better than the man who turns
Away from Gods, andoffers not.
5.61.6

विvi याyā जानातिjānāti जसुरिंjasuriṃ विvi तर्ष्यन्तंtṛṣyantaṃ विvi कामिनमkāminam |

देवत्राdevatrā कर्णुतेkṛṇute मनःmanaḥ ||

She who discerns the weak and worn, the man who thirsts and is in want
She sets her mind upon the Gods.
5.61.7

उतuta घाghā नेमोnemo अस्तुतःastutaḥ पुमांpumāṃ इतिiti बरुवेbruve पणिःpaṇiḥ |

सsa वैरदेयvairadeya इतit समःsamaḥ ||

And yet full many a one, unpraised, mean niggard, is entitled man:
Only in weregild is he such.
5.61.8

उतuta मेme ऽरपद'rapad युवतिरyuvatir ममन्दुषीmamanduṣī परतिprati शयावायśyāvāya वर्तनिमvartanim |

विvi रोहिताrohitā पुरुमीळ्हायpurumīḷhāya येमतुरyematur विप्रायviprāya दीर्घयशसेdīrghayaśase ||

And she, the young, the joyous-spirited, divulged the path to Śyāva, yea, to me.
Two red steeds carried me to Purumīlha's side, that sage of far-extended fame,
5.61.9

योyo मेme धेनूनांdhenūnāṃ शतंśataṃ वैददश्विरvaidadaśvir यथाyathā ददतdadat |

तरन्तtaranta इवiva मंहनाmaṃhanā ||

Him who, like Vaidadasvi, like Taranta, hath bestowed on me
A hundred cows in liberal gift.
5.61.10

यya ईंīṃ वहन्तvahanta आशुभिःāśubhiḥ पिबन्तोpibanto मदिरमmadiram मधुmadhu |

अत्रatra शरवांसिśravāṃsi दधिरेdadhire ||

They who are borne by rapid steeds, drinking the meath that gives delight,
They have attained high glories here.
5.61.11

येषांyeṣāṃ शरियाधिśriyādhi रोदसीrodasī विभ्राजन्तेvibhrājante रथेष्वratheṣv आā |

दिविdivi रुक्मrukma इवोपरिivopari ||

They by whose splendour both the worlds are over-spread they shine on cars
As the gold gleams above in heaven.
5.61.12

युवाyuvā सsa मारुतोmāruto गणसghaṇas तवेषरथोtveṣaratho अनेद्यःanedyaḥ |

शुभंयावाप्रतिष्कुतःśubhaṃyāvāpratiṣkutaḥ ||

That Marut band is ever young, borne on bright cars, unblamable,
Moving to victory, checked by none.
5.61.13

कोko वेदveda नूनमnūnam एषांeṣāṃ यत्राyatrā मदन्तिmadanti धूतयःdhūtayaḥ |

रतजाताṛtajātā अरेपसःarepasaḥ ||

Who knoweth, verily, of these where the All-shakers take delight,
Born, spotless, after sacred Law?
5.61.14

यूयमyūyam मर्तंmartaṃ विपन्यवःvipanyavaḥ परणेतारpraṇetāra इत्थाitthā धियाdhiyā |

शरोतारोśrotāro यामहूतिषुyāmahūtiṣu ||

Guides are ye, lovers of the song to mortal man through holy hymn,
And hearers when he cries for help.
5.61.15

तेte नोno वसूनिvasūni काम्याkāmyā पुरुश्चन्द्राpuruścandrā रिशादसःriśādasaḥ |

आā यज्ञियासोyajñiyāso वव्र्त्तनvavṛttana ||

Do ye, destroyers of the foe, worshipful and exceeding bright,
Send down the treasures that we crave.
5.61.16

एतमetam मेme सतोममstomam ऊर्म्येūrmye दार्भ्यायdārbhyāya पराparā वहvaha |

गिरोghiro देविdevi रथीरrathīr इवiva ||

OUrmya, bear thou far away to Darbhya this my hymn of praise,
Songs, Goddess, as if chariot-borne.
5.61.17

उतuta मेme वोचतादvocatād इतिiti सुतसोमेsutasome रथवीतौrathavītau |

नna कामोkāmo अपapa वेतिveti मेme ||

From me to Rathaviti say, when he hath pressed the Soma juice,
The wish I had departeth not.
5.61.18

एषeṣa कषेतिkṣeti रथवीतिरrathavītir मघवाmaghavā गोमतीरghomatīr अनुanu |

पर्वतेष्वparvateṣv अपश्रितःapaśritaḥ ||

This wealthy Rathaviti dwells among the people rich in kine,
Among the mountains, far withdrawn.
