HYMN LXXXVI. INDRA-AGNI.


इन्द्राग्नीindrāghnī यमyam अवथavatha उभाubhā वाजेषुvājeṣu मर्त्यमmartyam |

दर्ळ्हाdṛḷhā चितcit सsa परpra भेदतिbhedati दयुम्नाdyumnā वाणीरvāṇīr इवiva तरितःtritaḥ ||

THE mortal man whom ye, the Twain, Indra and Agni, help in fight,
Breaks through e’en strongly-guarded wealth as Tṛta burst his way through reeds.
5.86.1

याyā पर्तनासुpṛtanāsu दुष्टराduṣṭarā याyā वाजेषुvājeṣu शरवाय्याśravāyyā |

याyā पञ्चpañca चर्षणीरcarṣaṇīr अभॄन्द्राग्नीabhṝndrāghnī ताtā हवामहेhavāmahe ||

The Twain invincible in war, worthy to be renowned in frays,
Lords of the Fivefold. People, these, Indra and Agni, we invoke.
5.86.2

तयोरtayor इदid अमवचamavac छवसchavas तिग्माtighmā दिद्युनdidyun मघोनोःmaghonoḥ |

परतिprati दरुणाdruṇā गभस्त्योरghabhastyor गवांghavāṃ वर्त्रघ्नvṛtraghna एषतेeṣate ||

Impetuous is their strength, and keen the lightning of the mighty Pair,
Which from their arms speeds with the car to Vṛtra's slayer for the kine.
5.86.3

ताtā वामvām एषेeṣe रथानामrathānām इन्द्राग्नीindrāghnī हवामहेhavāmahe |

पतीpatī तुरस्यturasya राधसोrādhaso विद्वांसाvidvāṃsā गिर्वणस्तमाghirvaṇastamā ||

Indra and Agni, we invoke you both, as such, to send your cars:
Lords of quick-coming bounty, ye who know, chief lovers of the song.
5.86.4

ताtā वर्धन्तावvṛdhantāv अनुanu दयूनdyūn मर्तायmartāya देवावdevāv अदभाadabhā |

अर्हन्ताarhantā चितcit पुरोpuro दधेdadhe ऽंशेव'ṃśeva देवावdevāv अर्वतेarvate ||

These who give increase day by day, Gods without guile for mortal man,
Worthy themselves, I honour most, Two Gods as partners, for my horse.
5.86.5

एवेन्द्राग्निभ्यामevendrāghnibhyām अहाविahāvi हव्यंhavyaṃ शूष्यंśūṣyaṃ घर्तंghṛtaṃ नna पूतमpūtam अद्रिभिःadribhiḥ |

ताtā सूरिषुsūriṣu शरवोśravo बर्हदbṛhad रयिंrayiṃ गर्णत्सुghṛṇatsu दिध्र्तमdidhṛtam इषंiṣaṃ गर्णत्सुghṛṇatsu दिध्र्तमdidhṛtam ||

The strength-bestowing offering thus to Indra-Agni hath been paid, as butter, purified by stones.
Deal to our princes high renown, deal wealth to those who sing your praise, deal food to those who sing your praise.
