HYMN I. AGNI.


तवंtvaṃ हयग्नेhyaghne परथमोprathamo मनोतास्याmanotāsyā धियोdhiyo अभवोabhavo दस्मdasma होताhotā |

तवंtvaṃ सींsīṃ वर्षन्नक्र्णोर्दुष्टरीतुvṛṣannakṛṇorduṣṭarītu सहोsaho विश्वस्मैviśvasmai सहसेsahase सहध्यैsahadhyai ||

THOU, first inventor of this prayer, O Agni, Worker of Marvels, hast become our Herald.
Thou, Bull, hast made us strength which none may conquer, strength that shall overcome all other prowess.
6.1.1

अधाadhā होताhotā नयसीदोnyasīdo यजीयानिळसyajīyāniḷas पदpada इषयन्नीड्यःiṣayannīḍyaḥ सनsan |

तंtaṃ तवाtvā नरःnaraḥ परथमंprathamaṃ देवयन्तोdevayanto महोmaho रायेrāye चितयन्तोcitayanto अनुanu गमनghman ||

As Priest thou sattest at the seat of worship, furthering us, best Offerer, meet for honour.
So first to thee have pious men resorted, turning thy mind to thoughts of ample riches.
6.1.2

वर्तेवvṛteva यन्तंyantaṃ बहुभिर्वसव्यैस्त्वेbahubhirvasavyaistve रयिंrayiṃ जाग्र्वांसोjāghṛvāṃso अनुanu गमनghman |

रुशन्तमग्निंruśantamaghniṃ दर्शतंdarśataṃ बर्हन्तंbṛhantaṃ वपावन्तंvapāvantaṃ विश्वहाviśvahā दीदिवांसमdīdivāṃsam ||

In thee, still watching, they have followed riches, who goest with much wealth as with an army,
The radiant Agni, lofty, fair to look on, worshipped with marrow, evermore resplendent.
6.1.3

पदंpadaṃ देवस्यdevasya नमसाnamasā वयन्तःvyantaḥ शरवस्यवःśravasyavaḥ शरवśrava आपन्नम्र्क्तमāpannamṛktam |

नामानिnāmāni चिदcid दधिरेdadhire यज्ञियानिyajñiyāni भद्रायांbhadrāyāṃ तेte रणयन्तसन्द्र्ष्टौraṇayantasandṛṣṭau ||

They who approached the God's abode with homage, eager for glory, won them perfect glory:
Yea, they gained even sacrificial titles, and found delight in thine auspicious aspect.
6.1.4

तवांtvāṃ वर्धन्तिvardhanti कषितयःkṣitayaḥ पर्थिव्यांpṛthivyāṃ तवांtvāṃ रायrāya उभयासोubhayāso जनानामjanānām |

तवंtvaṃ तराताtrātā तरणेtaraṇe चेत्योcetyo भूःbhūḥ पिताpitā माताmātā सदमिनsadamin मानुषाणामmānuṣāṇām ||

On earth the people magnify thee greatly, thee their celestial and terrestrial riches.
Thou, Helper, must be known as our Preserver, Father and Mother of mankind for ever.
6.1.5

सपर्येण्यःsaparyeṇyaḥ सsa परियोpriyo विक्ष्वग्निर्होताvikṣvaghnirhotā मन्द्रोmandro निni षसादाṣasādā यजीयानyajīyān |

तंtaṃ तवाtvā वयंvayaṃ दमdama आā दीदिवांसमुपdīdivāṃsamupa जञुबाधोjñubādho नमसाnamasā सदेमsadema ||

Dear priest among mankind, adorable Agni hath seated him, joy-giver, skilled in worship.
Let us approach thee shining in thy dwelling, kneeling upon our knees, with adoration.
6.1.6

तंtaṃ तवाtvā वयंvayaṃ सुध्योsudhyo नव्यमग्ने-सुम्नायवnavyamaghne-sumnāyava ईमहेīmahe देवयन्तःdevayantaḥ |

तवंtvaṃ विशोviśo अनयोanayo दीद्यानोdīdyāno दिवोdivo अग्नेaghne बर्हताbṛhatā रोचनेनrocanena ||

Longing for bliss, pure-minded, God-devoted, Agni, we seek thee, such, meet to be lauded.
Thou, Agni, leddest forth our men to battle, refulgent with the heaven's exalted splendour.
6.1.7

विशांviśāṃ कविंkaviṃ विश्पतिंviśpatiṃ शश्वतीनांśaśvatīnāṃ नितोशनंnitośanaṃ वर्षभंvṛṣabhaṃ चर्षणीनामcarṣaṇīnām |

परेतीषणिमिषयन्तंpretīṣaṇimiṣayantaṃ पावकंpāvakaṃ राजन्तमग्निंrājantamaghniṃ यजतंyajataṃ रयीणामrayīṇām ||

Sage of mankind, all peoples' Lord and Master, the Bull of men, the sender down of blessings,
Still pressing on, promoting, purifying, Agni the Holy One, the Lord of riches.
6.1.8

सोso अग्नaghna ईजेīje शशमेśaśame चca मर्तोmarto यस्तyasta आनटānaṭ समिधाsamidhā हव्यदातिमhavyadātim |

यya आहुतिंāhutiṃ परिpari वेदाvedā नमोभिर्विश्वेतnamobhirviśvet सsa वामाvāmā दधतेत्वोतःdadhatetvotaḥ ||

Agni, the mortal who hath toiled and worshipped, brought thee oblations with his kindled fuel,
And well knows sacrifice with adoration, gains every joy with thee to guard and help him.
6.1.9

अस्माasmā उu तेte महिmahi महेmahe विधेमvidhema नमोभिरग्नेnamobhiraghne समिधोतsamidhota हव्यैःhavyaiḥ |

वेदीvedī सूनोsūno सहसोsahaso गीर्भिरुक्थैराghīrbhirukthairā तेte भद्रायांbhadrāyāṃ सुमतौयतेमsumatauyatema ||

Mightily let us worship thee the Mighty, with reverence, Agni! fuel and oblations,
With songs, O Son of Strength, with hymns, with altar: so may we strive for thine auspicious favour.
6.1.10

आā यस्ततन्थyastatantha रोदसीrodasī विvi भासाbhāsā शरवोभिश्चśravobhiśca शरवस्यस्तरुत्रःśravasyastarutraḥ |

बर्हद्भिर्वाजैbṛhadbhirvājai सथविरेभिरस्मेsthavirebhirasme रेवद्भिरग्नेrevadbhiraghne वितरंvitaraṃ विvi भाहिbhāhi ||

Thou who hast covered heaven and earth with splendour and with thy glories, glorious and triumphant.
Continue thou to shine on us, O Agni, with strength abundant, rich, and long enduring.
6.1.11

नर्वदnṛvad वसोvaso सदमिदsadamid धेह्यस्मेdhehyasme भूरिbhūri तोकायtokāya तनयायtanayāya पश्वःpaśvaḥ |

पूर्वीरिषोpūrvīriṣo बर्हतीरारेघाbṛhatīrāreaghā अस्मेasme भद्राbhadrā सौश्रवसानिsauśravasāni सन्तुsantu ||

Vouchsafe us ever, as man needs, O Vasu, abundant wealth of kine for son and offspring.
Food noble, plenteous, far from sin and evil, he with us, and fair fame to make us happy.
6.1.12

पुरूण्यग्नेpurūṇyaghne पुरुधाpurudhā तवायाtvāyā वसूनिvasūni राजनrājan वसुताvasutā तेte अश्यामaśyām |

पुरूणिpurūṇi हिhi तवेtve पुरुवारpuruvāra सन्त्यग्नेsantyaghne वसुvasu विधतेvidhate राजनिrājani तवेtve ||

May I obtain much wealth in many places by love of thee and through thy grace, King Agni;
For in thee Bounteous One, in thee the Sovran, Agni, are many boons for him who serves thee.
6.1.13
