HYMN XLVI. INDRA.


तवामिदtvāmid धिdhi हवामहेhavāmahe साताsātā वाजस्यvājasya कारवःkāravaḥ |

तवांtvāṃ वर्त्रेष्विन्द्रvṛtreṣvindra सत्पतिंsatpatiṃ नरस्त्वांnarastvāṃ काष्ठास्वर्वतःkāṣṭhāsvarvataḥ ||

THAT we may win us wealth and power we poets, verily, call on thee:
In war men call on thee, Indra, the hero's Lord, in the steed's race-course call on thee.
6.46.1

सsa तवंtvaṃ नश्चित्रnaścitra वज्रहस्तvajrahasta धर्ष्णुयाdhṛṣṇuyā महmaha सतवानोstavāno अद्रिवःadrivaḥ |

गामश्वंghāmaśvaṃ रथ्यमिन्द्रrathyamindra संsaṃ किरkira सत्राsatrā वाजंvājaṃ नna जिग्युषेjighyuṣe ||

As such, O Wonderful, whose hand holds thunder, praised as mighty, Caster of the Stone!
Pour on us boldly, Indra, kine and chariotsteeds, ever to be the conqueror's strength.
6.46.2

यःyaḥ सत्राहाsatrāhā विचर्षणिरिन्द्रंvicarṣaṇirindraṃ तंtaṃ हूमहेhūmahe वयमvayam |

सहस्रमुष्कsahasramuṣka तुविन्र्म्णtuvinṛmṇa सत्पतेsatpate भवाbhavā समत्सुsamatsu नोno वर्धेvṛdhe ||

We call upon that Indra, who, most active, ever slays the foe:
Lord of the brave, Most Manly, with a thousand powers, help thou and prosper us in fight.
6.46.3

बाधसेbādhase जनानjanān वर्षभेवvṛṣabheva मन्युनाmanyunā घर्षौghṛṣau मीळ्हmīḷha रचीषमṛcīṣama |

अस्माकंasmākaṃ बोध्यविताbodhyavitā महाधनेmahādhane तनूष्वप्सुtanūṣvapsu सूर्येsūrye ||

Rcisama, thou forcest men as with a bull, with anger, in the furious fray.
Be thou our Helper in the mighty battle fought for sunlight, water, and for life.
6.46.4

इन्द्रindra जयेष्ठंjyeṣṭhaṃ नna आā भरनोजिष्ठंbharanojiṣṭhaṃ पपुरिpapuri शरवःśravaḥ |

येनेमेyeneme चित्रcitra वज्रहस्तvajrahasta रोदसीrodasī ओभेobhe सुशिप्रsuśipra पराःprāḥ ||

O Indra, bring us name and fame, enriching, mightiest, excellent,
Wherewith, O Wondrous God, fair-visored, thunder-armed, thou hast filled full this earth and heaven.
6.46.5

तवामुग्रमवसेtvāmughramavase चर्षणीसहंcarṣaṇīsahaṃ राजनrājan देवेषुdeveṣu हूमहेhūmahe |

विश्वाviśvā सुsu नोno विथुराvithurā पिब्दनाpibdanā वसो.अमित्रानvaso.amitrān सुषहानsuṣahān कर्धिkṛdhi ||

We call on thee, O King, Mighty amid the Gods, Ruler of men, to succour us.
All that is weak in us, Excellent God, make firm: make our foes easy to subdue.
6.46.6

यदिन्द्रyadindra नाहुषीष्वानोजोnāhuṣīṣvānojo नर्म्णंnṛmṇaṃ चca कर्ष्टिषुkṛṣṭiṣu |

यदyad वापञ्चvāpañca कषितीनांkṣitīnāṃ दयुम्नमाdyumnamā भरbhara सत्राsatrā विश्वानिviśvāni पौंस्याpauṃsyā ||

All strength and valour that is found, Indra, in tribes of Nahusas, and all the splendid fame that the Five Tribes enjoy
Bring, yea, all manly powers at once.
6.46.7

यदyad वाvā तर्क्षौtṛkṣau मघवनmaghavan दरुह्यावाdruhyāvā जनेjane यतyat पूरौpūrau कच्चkacca वर्ष्ण्यमvṛṣṇyam |

अस्मभ्यंasmabhyaṃ तदtad रिरीहिrirīhi संsaṃ नर्षाह्ये.अमित्रानnṛṣāhye.amitrān पर्त्सुतुर्वणेpṛtsuturvaṇe ||

Or, Maghavan, what vigorous strength in Trksi lay, in Druhyus or in Paru's folk,
Fully bestow on us, that, in the conquering fray, we may subdue our foes in fight.
6.46.8

इन्द्रindra तरिधातुtridhātu शरणंśaraṇaṃ तरिवरूथंtrivarūthaṃ सवस्तिमतsvastimat |

छर्दिर्यछchardiryacha मघवद्भ्यश्चmaghavadbhyaśca मह्यंmahyaṃ चca यावयाyāvayā दिद्युमेभ्यःdidyumebhyaḥ ||

O Indra, grant a happy home, a triple refuge triply strong.
Bestow a dwelling-place on the rich lords and me, and keep thy dart afar from these.
6.46.9

येye गव्यताghavyatā मनसाmanasā शत्रुमादभुरभिप्रघ्नन्तिśatrumādabhurabhipraghnanti धर्ष्णुयाdhṛṣṇuyā |

अधadha समाsmā नोno मघवन्निन्द्रmaghavannindra गिर्वणस्तनूपाghirvaṇastanūpā अन्तमोantamo भवbhava ||

They who with minds intent on spoil subdue the foe, boldly attack and smite him down,—
From these, O Indra Maghavan who lovest song, be closest guardian of our lives.
6.46.10

अधadha समाsmā नोno वर्धेvṛdhe भवेन्द्रbhavendra नायमवाnāyamavā युधिyudhi |

यदन्तरिक्षेपतयन्तिyadantarikṣepatayanti पर्णिनोparṇino दिद्यवस्तिग्ममूर्धानःdidyavastighmamūrdhānaḥ ||

And now, O Indra, strengthen us: come near and aid us in the fight,
What time the feathered shafts are flying in the air, the arrows with their sharpened points.
6.46.11

यत्रyatra शूरासस्तन्वोśūrāsastanvo वितन्वतेvitanvate परियाpriyā शर्मśarma पितॄणामpitṝṇām |

अधadha समाsmā यछyacha तन्वेtanve तनेtane चca छर्दिरचित्तंchardiracittaṃ यावयyāvaya दवेषःdveṣaḥ ||

Give us, where heroes strain their bodies in the fight, the shelter that our fathers loved.
To us and to our sons give refuge: keep afar all unobserved hostility.
6.46.12

यदिन्द्रyadindra सर्गेsarghe अर्वतश्चोदयासेarvataścodayāse महाधनेmahādhane |

असमनेasamane अध्वनिव्र्जिनेadhvanivṛjine पथिpathi शयेनानिवśyenāniva शरवस्यतहśravasyatah ||

When, Indra, in the mighty fray thou urgest chargers to their speed,
On the uneven road and on a toilsome path, like falcons, eager for renown,
6.46.13

सिन्धून्रिवsindhūnriva परवणpravaṇa आशुयाāśuyā यतोyato यदिyadi कलोशमनुklośamanu षवणिṣvaṇi |

आā येye वयोvayo नna वर्व्र्तत्यामिषिvarvṛtatyāmiṣi गर्भीताghṛbhītā बाह्वोर्गविbāhvorghavi ||

Speeding like rivers rushing down a steep descent, responsive to the urging call,
That come like birds attracted to the bait, held in by reins in both the driver's hands.
