HYMN LI. VIŚVEDEVAS.


उदुudu तयच्चक्षुर्महिtyaccakṣurmahi मित्रयोरानेतिmitrayorāneti परियंpriyaṃ वरुणयोरदब्धमvaruṇayoradabdham |

रतस्यṛtasya शुचिśuci दर्शतमनीकंdarśatamanīkaṃ रुक्मोrukmo नna दिवdiva उदिताव्यद्यौतuditāvyadyaut ||

THAT mighty eye of Varuṇa and Mitra, infallible and dear, is moving upward.
The pure and lovely face of holy Order hath shone like gold of heaven in its arising.
6.51.1

वेदveda यस्त्रीणिyastrīṇi विदथान्येषांvidathānyeṣāṃ देवानांdevānāṃ जन्मjanma सनुतराsanutarā चca विप्रःvipraḥ |

रजुṛju मर्तेषुmarteṣu वर्जिनाvṛjinā चca पश्यन्नभिpaśyannabhi चष्टेcaṣṭe सूरोsūro अर्यarya एवानevān ||

The Sage who knows these Gods’ three ranks and orders, and all their generations near and distant,
Beholding good and evil acts of mortals, Sūra marks well the doing of the pious.
6.51.2

सतुषstuṣa उu वोvo महmaha रतस्यṛtasya गोपानदितिंghopānaditiṃ मित्रंmitraṃ वरुणंvaruṇaṃ सुजातानsujātān |

अर्यमणंaryamaṇaṃ भगमदब्धधीतीनछाbhaghamadabdhadhītīnachā वोचेvoce सधन्यःsadhanyaḥ पावकानpāvakān ||

I praise you Guards of mighty Law eternal, Aditi, Mitra, Varuṇa, the noble,
Aryaman, Bhaga, all whose thoughts are faithful: hither I call the Bright who share in common.
6.51.3

रिशादसःriśādasaḥ सत्पतीन्रदब्धानsatpatīnradabdhān महोmaho राज्ञःrājñaḥ सुवसनस्यsuvasanasya दातॄनdātṝn |

यूनःyūnaḥ सुक्षत्रानsukṣatrān कषयतोkṣayato दिवोdivo नॄनादित्यानnṝnādityān याम्यदितिंyāmyaditiṃ दुवोयुduvoyu ||

Lords of the brave, infallible, foe-destroyers, great Kings, bestowers of fair homes to dwell in,
Young, Heroes, ruling heaven with strong dominion, Ādityas, Aditi I seek with worship.
6.51.4

दयौषdyauṣ पितःpitaḥ पर्थिविpṛthivi मातरध्रुगग्नेmātaradhrughaghne भरातर्वसवोbhrātarvasavo मर्ळताmṛḷatā नःnaḥ |

विश्वviśva आदित्याādityā अदितेadite सजोषाsajoṣā अस्मभ्यंasmabhyaṃ शर्मśarma बहुलंbahulaṃ विvi यन्तyanta ||

O Heaven our Father, Earth our guileless Mother, O Brother Agni, and ye Vasus, bless us.
Grant us, O Aditi and ye Ādityas, all of one mind, your manifold protection.
6.51.5

माmā नोno वर्कायvṛkāya वर्क्येvṛkye समस्माsamasmā अघायतेaghāyate रीरधताrīradhatā यजत्राःyajatrāḥ |

यूयंyūyaṃ हिhi षठाṣṭhā रथ्योrathyo नस्तनूनांnastanūnāṃ यूयंyūyaṃ दक्षस्यdakṣasya वचसोvacaso बभूवbabhūva ||

Give us not up to any evil creature, as spoil to wolf or she-wolf, O ye Holy.
For ye are they who guide aright our bodies, ye are the rulers of our speech and vigour.
6.51.6

माmā वva एनोeno अन्यक्र्तंanyakṛtaṃ भुजेमbhujema माmā ततtat कर्मkarma वसवोvasavo यच्चयध्वेyaccayadhve |

विश्वस्यviśvasya हिhi कषयथkṣayatha विश्वदेवाःviśvadevāḥ सवयंsvayaṃ रिपुस्तन्वंripustanvaṃ रीरिषीष्टrīriṣīṣṭa ||

Let us not suffer for the sin of others, nor do the deed which ye, O Vasus, punish.
Ye, Universal Gods! are all-controllers: may he do harm unto himself who hates Me.
6.51.7

नमnama इदुग्रंidughraṃ नमnama आā विवासेvivāse नमोnamo दाधारdādhāra पर्थिवीमुतpṛthivīmuta दयामdyām |

नमोnamo देवेभ्योdevebhyo नमnama ईशīśa एषांeṣāṃ कर्तंkṛtaṃ चिदेनोcideno नमसाविवासेnamasāvivāse ||

Mighty is homage: I adopt and use it. Homage hath held in place the earth and heaven.
Homage to Gods! Homage commands and rules them. I banish even committed sin by homage
6.51.8

रतस्यṛtasya वोvo रथ्यःrathyaḥ पूतदक्षानpūtadakṣān रतस्यṛtasya पस्त्यसदोpastyasado अदब्धानadabdhān |

तानाtānā नमोभिरुरुचक्षसोnamobhirurucakṣaso नॄनnṝn विश्वानviśvān वva आā नमेname महोmaho यजत्राःyajatrāḥ ||

You Furtherers of Law, pure in your spirit, infallible, dwellers in the home of Order,
To you all Heroes mighty and far-seeing I bow me down, O Holy Ones, with homage.
6.51.9

तेte हिhi शरेष्ठवर्चसस्तśreṣṭhavarcasasta उu नस्तिरोnastiro विश्वानिviśvāni दुरिताduritā नयन्तिnayanti |

सुक्षत्रासोsukṣatrāso वरुणोvaruṇo मित्रोmitro अग्निरतधीतयोaghnirtadhītayo वक्मराजसत्याःvakmarājasatyāḥ ||

For these are they who shine with noblest splendour; through all our troubles these conduct us safely-
Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni, mighty Rulers, trueminded, faithful to the hymn's controllers.
6.51.10

तेte नna इन्द्रःindraḥ पर्थिवीpṛthivī कषामkṣāma वर्धनvardhan पूषाpūṣā भगोbhagho अदितिःaditiḥ पञ्चpañca जनाःjanāḥ |

सुशर्माणःsuśarmāṇaḥ सववसःsvavasaḥ सुनीथाsunīthā भवन्तुbhavantu नःसुत्रात्रासःnaḥsutrātrāsaḥ सुगोपाःsughopāḥ ||

May they, Earth, Aditi, Indra, Bhaga, Pūṣan increase our laud, increase the Fivefold people.
Giving good help, good refuge, goodly guidance, be they our good deliverers, good protectors.
6.51.11

नूnū सद्मानंsadmānaṃ दिव्यंdivyaṃ नंशिnaṃśi देवाdevā भारद्वाजःbhāradvājaḥ सुमतिंsumatiṃ यातिyāti होताhotā |

आसानेभिर्यजमानोāsānebhiryajamāno मियेधैर्देवानांmiyedhairdevānāṃ जन्मjanma वसूयुर्ववन्दvasūyurvavanda ||

Come now, O Gods, to your celestial station: the Bharadvājas' priest entreats your favour.
He, sacrificing, fain for wealth, hath honoured the Gods vath those who sit and share oblations.
6.51.12

अपapa तयंtyaṃ वर्जिनंvṛjinaṃ रिपुंripuṃ सतेनमग्नेstenamaghne दुराध्यमdurādhyam |

दविष्ठमस्यdaviṣṭhamasya सत्पतेsatpate कर्धीkṛdhī सुगमsugham ||

Agni, drive thou the wicked foe, the evil-hearted thief away,
Far, far, Lord of the brave I and give us easy paths.
6.51.13

गरावाणःghrāvāṇaḥ सोमsoma नोno हिhi कंkaṃ सखित्वनायsakhitvanāya वावशुःvāvaśuḥ |

जहीjahī नयत्रिणंnyatriṇaṃ पणिंpaṇiṃ वर्कोvṛko हिhi षःṣaḥ ||

Soma, these pressing-stones have called aloud to win thee for our Friend.
Destroy the greedy Paṇi, for a wolf is he.
6.51.14

यूयंyūyaṃ हिhi षठाṣṭhā सुदानवsudānava इन्द्रज्येष्ठाindrajyeṣṭhā अभिद्यवःabhidyavaḥ |

कर्ताkartā नोno अध्वन्नाadhvannā सुगंsughaṃ गोपाghopā अमाamā ||

Ye, O most bountiful, are they who, led by Indra, seek the sky.
Give us good paths for travel: guard us ivell at home.
6.51.15

अपिapi पन्थामगन्महिpanthāmaghanmahi सवस्तिगामनेहसमsvastighāmanehasam |

येनyena विश्वाःviśvāḥ परिद्विषोparidviṣo वर्णक्तिvṛṇakti विन्दतेvindate वसुvasu ||

Now have we entered on the road that leads to bliss, without a foe,
The road whereon a man escapes all enemies and gathers wealth.
