HYMN LXVIL MITRA-VARUṆA.


विश्वेषांviśveṣāṃ वःvaḥ सतांsatāṃ जयेष्ठतमाjyeṣṭhatamā गीर्भिर्मित्रावरुणावाव्र्धध्यैghīrbhirmitrāvaruṇāvāvṛdhadhyai |

संsaṃ याyā रश्मेवraśmeva यमतुर्यमिष्ठाyamaturyamiṣṭhā दवाdvā जनानसमाjanānasamā बाहुभिःbāhubhiḥ सवैःsvaiḥ ||

NOW Mitra-Varuṇa shall be exalted high by your songs, noblest of all existing;
They who, as ’twere with reins are best Controllers, unequalled with their arms to check the people.
6.67.1

इयंiyaṃ मदmad वांvāṃ परpra सत्र्णीतेstṛṇīte मनीषोपmanīṣopa परियाpriyā नमसाnamasā बर्हिरछbarhiracha |

यन्तंyantaṃ नोno मित्रावरुणावध्र्ष्टंmitrāvaruṇāvadhṛṣṭaṃ छर्दिर्यदchardiryad वांvāṃ वरूथ्यंvarūthyaṃ सुदानूsudānū ||

To you Two Gods is this my thought extended, turned to the sacred grass with loving homage.
Give us, O Mitra-Varuṇa, a dwelling safe from attack, which ye shall guard, Boon-Givers!
6.67.2

आā यातंyātaṃ मित्रावरुणाmitrāvaruṇā सुशस्त्युपsuśastyupa परियाpriyā नमसाnamasā हूयमानाhūyamānā |

संsaṃ यावप्नःyāvapnaḥ सथोstho अपसेवapaseva जनाञ्छ्रुधीयतश्चिदjanāñchrudhīyataścid यतथोyatatho महित्वाmahitvā ||

Come hither, Mitra-Varuṇa, invited with eulogies and loving adoration,
Ye who with your might, as Work-Controllers, urge even men who quickly hear to labour.
6.67.3

अश्वाaśvā नna याyā वाजिनाvājinā पूतबन्धूpūtabandhū रताṛtā यदyad गर्भमदितिर्भरध्यैgharbhamaditirbharadhyai |

परpra याyā महिmahi महान्ताmahāntā जायमानाjāyamānā घोराghorā मर्तायरिपवेmartāyaripave निni दीधःdīdhaḥ ||

Whom, of pure origin, like two strong horses, Aditi bore as babes in proper season,
Whom, Mighty at your birth, the Mighty Goddess brought forth as terrors to the mortal foeman.
6.67.4

विश्वेviśve यदyad वांvāṃ मंहनाmaṃhanā मन्दमानाःmandamānāḥ कषत्रंkṣatraṃ देवासोdevāso अदधुःadadhuḥ सजोषाःsajoṣāḥ |

परिpari यदyad भूथोbhūtho रोदसीrodasī चिदुर्वीcidurvī सन्तिsanti सपशोspaśo अदब्धासोadabdhāso अमूराःamūrāḥ ||

As all the Gods in their great joy and gladness gave you with one accord your high dominion,
As ye surround both worlds, though wide and spacious your spies are ever true and never bewildered.
6.67.5

ताtā हिhi कषत्रंkṣatraṃ धारयेथेdhārayethe अनुanu दयूनdyūn दरंहेथेdṛṃhethe सानुमुपमादिवsānumupamādiva दयोःdyoḥ |

दर्ळ्होdṛḷho नक्षत्रnakṣatra उतuta विश्वदेवोviśvadevo भूमिमातानbhūmimātān दयांdyāṃ धासिनायोःdhāsināyoḥ ||

So, through the days maintaining princely power. ye prop the height as ’twere from loftiest heaven.
The Star of all the Gods, established, filleth the heaven and earth with food of man who liveth.
6.67.6

ताtā विग्रंvighraṃ धैथेdhaithe जठरंjaṭharaṃ पर्णध्याpṛṇadhyā आā यतyat सद्मsadma सभ्र्तयःsabhṛtayaḥ पर्णन्तिpṛṇanti |

नna मर्ष्यन्तेmṛṣyante युवतयो.अवाताyuvatayo.avātā विvi यतyat पयोpayo विश्वजिन्वाviśvajinvā भरन्तेbharante ||

Take the strong drink, to quaff till ye are sated, when he and his attendants fill the chamber.
The young Maids brook not that none seeks to win them, when, Quickeners of all! they scatter moisture.
6.67.7

ताtā जिह्वयाjihvayā सदमेदंsadamedaṃ सुमेधाsumedhā आā यदyad वांvāṃ सत्योsatyo अरतिरतेaratirte भूतbhūt |

तदtad वांvāṃ महित्वंmahitvaṃ घर्तान्नावस्तुghṛtānnāvastu युवंyuvaṃ दाशुषेविdāśuṣevi चयिष्टमंहःcayiṣṭamaṃhaḥ ||

So with your tongue come ever, when your envoy, faithful and very wise, attends our worship.
Nourished by holy oil! he this yGur glory: annihilate the sacrificer's trouble.
6.67.8

परpra यदyad वांvāṃ मित्रावरुणाmitrāvaruṇā सपूर्धनspūrdhan परियाpriyā धामdhāma युवधिताyuvadhitā मिनन्तिminanti |

नna येye देवासdevāsa ओहसाohasā नna मर्ताmartā अयज्ञसाचोayajñasāco अप्योapyo नपुत्राःnaputrāḥ ||

When, Mitra-Varuṇa, they strive against you and break tlie friendly laws ye have established,
They, neither Gods nor men in estimation, like Api's sons have godless sacrifices.
6.67.9

विvi यदyad वाचंvācaṃ कीस्तासोkīstāso भरन्तेbharante शंसन्तिśaṃsanti केke चिनcin निविदोnivido मनानाःmanānāḥ |

आदād वांvāṃ बरवामbravāma सत्यान्युक्थाsatyānyukthā नकिर्देवेभिर्यतथोnakirdevebhiryatatho महित्वाmahitvā ||

When singers in their song uplift their voices, some chant the Nivid texts with steady purpose.
Then may we sing you lauds that shall be fruitful: dp ye not rival all the Gods in greatness?
6.67.10

अवोरित्थाavoritthā वांvāṃ छर्दिषोchardiṣo अभिष्टौabhiṣṭau युवोर्मित्रावरुणावस्क्र्धोयुyuvormitrāvaruṇāvaskṛdhoyu |

अनुanu यदyad गावghāva सफुरानsphurān रजिप्यंṛjipyaṃ धर्ष्णुंdhṛṣṇuṃ यदyad रणेव्र्षणंraṇevṛṣaṇaṃ युनजनyunajan ||

O Mitra-Varuṇa, may your large bounty come to us hither, near to this our dwelling,
When the kine haste to us, and when they harness the fleet-foot mettled stallion for the battle.
