HYMN XVI. AGNI.


एनाenā वोvo अग्निंaghniṃ नमसोर्जोnamasorjo नपातमाnapātamā हुवेhuve |

परियंpriyaṃ चेतिष्ठमरतिंcetiṣṭhamaratiṃ सवध्वरंsvadhvaraṃ विश्वस्यviśvasya दूतमम्र्तमdūtamamṛtam ||

WITH this my reverent hymn I call Agni for you, the Son of Strength,
Dear, wisest envoy, served with noble sacrifice, immortal messenger of all.
7.16.1

सsa योजतेyojate अरुषाaruṣā विश्वभोजसाviśvabhojasā सsa दुद्रवतdudravat सवाहुतःsvāhutaḥ |

सुब्रह्माsubrahmā यज्ञःyajñaḥ सुशमीsuśamī वसूनांvasūnāṃ देवंdevaṃ राधोrādho जनानामjanānām ||

His two red horses, all-supporting, let him yoke: let him, well-worshipped, urge them fast.
Then hath the sacrifice good prayers and happy end, and heavenly gift of wealth to men.
7.16.2

उदस्यudasya शोचिरस्थादाजुह्वानस्यśocirasthādājuhvānasya मीळ्हुषःmīḷhuṣaḥ |

उदud धूमासोरुषासोdhūmāsoaruṣāso दिविस्प्र्शःdivispṛśaḥ समग्निमिन्धतेsamaghnimindhate नरःnaraḥ ||

The flame of him the Bountiful, the Much-invoked, hath mounted up,
And his red-coloured smoke-clouds reach and touch the sky: the men are kindling Agni well.
7.16.3

तंtaṃ तवाtvā दूतंdūtaṃ कर्ण्महेkṛṇmahe यशस्तमंyaśastamaṃ देवानाdevānā वीतयेvītaye वहvaha |

विश्वाviśvā सूनोsūno सहसोsahaso मर्तभोजनाmartabhojanā रास्वrāsva तदtad यतyat तवेमहेtvemahe ||

Thee, thee Most Glorious One we make our messenger. Bring the Gods hither to the feast.
Give us, O Son of Strength, all food that fcedeth man: give that for which we pray to thee.
7.16.4

तवमग्नेtvamaghne गर्हपतिस्त्वंghṛhapatistvaṃ होताhotā नोno अध्वरेadhvare |

तवंtvaṃ पोताpotā विश्ववारviśvavāra परचेताpracetā यक्षिyakṣi वेषिveṣi चca वार्यमvāryam ||

Thou, Agni, art the homestead's Lord, our Herald at the sacrifice.
Lord of all boons, thou art the Cleanser and a Sage. Pay worship, and enjoy the good.
7.16.5

कर्धिkṛdhi रत्नंratnaṃ यजमानायyajamānāya सुक्रतोsukrato तवंtvaṃ हिhi रत्नधाratnadhā असिasi |

आनāna रतेṛte शिशीहिśiśīhi विश्वंviśvaṃ रत्विजंṛtvijaṃ सुशंसोsuśaṃso यश्चyaśca दक्षतेdakṣate ||

Give riches to the sacrificer, O Most Wise, for thou art he who granteth wealth.
Inspire with zeal each priest at this our solemn rite; all who are skilled in singing praise.
7.16.6

तवेtve अग्नेaghne सवाहुतsvāhuta परियासःpriyāsaḥ सन्तुsantu सूरयःsūrayaḥ |

यन्तारोyantāro येye मघवानोmaghavāno जनानामूर्वानjanānāmūrvān दयन्तdayanta गोनामghonām ||

O Agni who art worshipped well, dear let our princes he to thee,
Our wealthy patrons who are governors of men, who part, as gifts, their stalls of kine.
7.16.7

येषामिळाyeṣāmiḷā घर्तहस्ताghṛtahastā दुरोणduroṇa आनपिānapi पराताprātā निषीदतिniṣīdati |

तांस्त्रायस्वtāṃstrāyasva सहस्यsahasya दरुहोdruho निदोnido यछाyachā नःnaḥ शर्मśarma दीर्घश्रुतdīrghaśrut ||

They in whose home, her hand bearing the sacred oil, Iḷā sits down well-satisfied-
Guard them, Victorious God, from slander and from harm. give us a refuge famed afar.
7.16.8

सsa मन्द्रयाmandrayā चca जिह्वयाjihvayā वह्निरासाvahnirāsā विदुष्टरःviduṣṭaraḥ |

अग्नेaghne रयिंrayiṃ मघवद्भ्योmaghavadbhyo नna आā वहvaha हव्यदातिंhavyadātiṃ चca सूदयsūdaya ||

Do thou, a Priest with pleasant tongue, most wise, and very near to us,
Agni, bring riches hither to our liberal chiefs, and speed the oflering of our gifts.
7.16.9

येye राधांसिrādhāṃsi ददत्यश्व्याdadatyaśvyā मघाmaghā कामेनkāmena शरवसोśravaso महःmahaḥ |

तानंहसःtānaṃhasaḥ पिप्र्हिpipṛhi पर्त्र्भिषpartṛbhiṣ टवंṭvaṃ शतंśataṃ पूर्भिर्यविष्ठ्यpūrbhiryaviṣṭhya ||

They who bestow as bounty plenteous wealth of steeds, moved by desire of great renown-
Do thou with saving help preserve them from distress, Most Youthful! with a hundred forts.
7.16.10

देवोdevo वोvo दरविणोदाःdraviṇodāḥ पूर्णांpūrṇāṃ विवष्ट्यासिचमvivaṣṭyāsicam |

उदud वाvā सिञ्चध्वमुपsiñcadhvamupa वाvā पर्णध्वमादिदpṛṇadhvamādid वोvo देवdeva ओहतेohate ||

The God who gives your wealth demands a full libation poured to him.
Pour ye it forth, then fill the vessel full again: then doth the God pay heed to you.
7.16.11

तंtaṃ होतारमध्वरस्यhotāramadhvarasya परचेतसंpracetasaṃ वह्निंvahniṃ देवाdevā अक्र्ण्वतakṛṇvata |

दधातिdadhāti रत्नंratnaṃ विधतेvidhate सुवीर्यमग्निर्जनायsuvīryamaghnirjanāya दाशुषेdāśuṣe ||

Him have the Gods appointed Priest of sacrifice, oblation-bearer, passing wise.
Agni gives wealth and valour to the worshipper, to folk who offer up their gifts.
