HYMN XCVIL BṚHASPATI.


यज्ञेyajñe दिवोdivo नर्षदनेnṛṣadane पर्थिव्याpṛthivyā नरोnaro यत्रyatra देवयवोdevayavo मदन्तिmadanti |

इन्द्रायindrāya यत्रyatra सवनानिsavanāni सुन्वेsunve गमनghaman मदायmadāya परथमंprathamaṃ वयशvayaś चca ||

WHERE Heaven and Earth combine in men's assembly, and ttose who love the Gods delight in worship,
Where the libations are effused for Indra, may he come first to drink and make him stronger.
7.97.1

आā दैव्याdaivyā वर्णीमहेvṛṇīmahe ऽवांसि'vāṃsi बर्हस्पतिरbṛhaspatir नोno महmaha आā सखायःsakhāyaḥ |

यथाyathā भवेमbhavema मीळ्हुषेmīḷhuṣe अनागाanāghā योyo नोno दाताdātā परावतःparāvataḥ पितेवpiteva ||

We crave the heavenly grace of Gods to guard us-so may Bṛhaspati, O friends, exalt us-
That he, the Bounteous God, may find us sintess, who giveth from a distance like a father.
7.97.2

तमtam उu जयेष्ठंjyeṣṭhaṃ नमसाnamasā हविर्भिःhavirbhiḥ सुशेवमsuśevam बरह्मणसbrahmaṇas पतिंpatiṃ गर्णीषेghṛṇīṣe |

इन्द्रंindraṃ शलोकोśloko महिmahi दैव्यःdaivyaḥ सिषक्तुsiṣaktu योyo बरह्मणोbrahmaṇo देवक्र्तस्यdevakṛtasya राजाrājā ||

That Brahmaṇaspati, most High and Gracious, I glorify with offerings and with homage.
May the great song of praise divine, reach Indra who is the King of prayer the Gods’ creation.
7.97.3

सsa आā नोno योनिंyoniṃ सदतुsadatu परेष्ठोpreṣṭho बर्हस्पतिरbṛhaspatir विश्ववारोviśvavāro योyo अस्तिasti |

कामोkāmo रायःrāyaḥ सुवीर्यस्यsuvīryasya तंtaṃ दातdāt पर्षनparṣan नोno अतिati सश्चतोsaścato अरिष्टानariṣṭān ||

May that Bṛhaspati who brings all blessings, most dearly loved, be seated by our altar.
Heroes and wealth we crave; may he bestow them, and bear us safe beyond the men who vex us.
7.97.4

तमtam आā नोno अर्कमarkam अम्र्तायamṛtāya जुष्टमjuṣṭam इमेime धासुरdhāsur अम्र्तासःamṛtāsaḥ पुराजाःpurājāḥ |

शुचिक्रन्दंśucikrandaṃ यजतमyajatam पस्त्य्र्नामpastyṛnām बर्हस्पतिमbṛhaspatim अनर्वाणंanarvāṇaṃ हुवेमhuvema ||

To us these Deathless Ones, erst born, have granted this laud of ours which gives the Immortal pleasure.
Let us invoke Bṛhaspati, the foeless, the clear-voiced God, the Holy One of households
7.97.5

तंtaṃ शग्मासोśaghmāso अरुषासोaruṣāso अश्वाaśvā बर्हस्पतिंbṛhaspatiṃ सहवाहोsahavāho वहन्तिvahanti |

सहशsahaś चिदcid यस्यyasya नीलवतnīlavat सधस्थंsadhasthaṃ नभोnabho नna रूपमrūpam अरुषंaruṣaṃ वसानाःvasānāḥ ||

Him, this Bṛhaspati, his red-hued horses, drawing together, full of strength, bring hither.
Robed in red colour like the cloud, they carry the Lord of Might whose friendship gives a dwelling.
7.97.6

सsa हिhi शुचिःśuciḥ शतपत्रःśatapatraḥ सsa शुन्ध्युरśundhyur हिरण्यवाशीरhiraṇyavāśīr इषिरःiṣiraḥ सवर्षाःsvarṣāḥ |

बर्हस्पतिःbṛhaspatiḥ सsa सवावेशsvāveśa रष्वःṛṣvaḥ पुरूpurū सखिभ्यsakhibhya आसुतिंāsutiṃ करिष्ठःkariṣṭhaḥ ||

For he is pure, with hundred wings, refulgent, with sword of gold, impetuous, winning sunlight.
Sublime Bṛhaspati, easy of access granteth his friends most bountiful refreshment.
7.97.7

देवीdevī देवस्यdevasya रोदसीrodasī जनित्रीjanitrī बर्हस्पतिंbṛhaspatiṃ वाव्र्धतुरvāvṛdhatur महित्वाmahitvā |

दक्षाय्यायdakṣāyyāya दक्षताdakṣatā सखायःsakhāyaḥ करदkarad बरह्मणेbrahmaṇe सुतराsutarā सुगाधाsughādhā ||

Both Heaven and Earth, divine, the Deity's Parents, have made Bṛhaspati increase in grandeur.
Glorify him, O friends, who merits glory: may he give prayer fair way and easy passage.
7.97.8

इयंiyaṃ वामvām बरह्मणसbrahmaṇas पतेpate सुव्र्क्तिरsuvṛktir बरह्मेन्द्रायbrahmendrāya वज्रिणेvajriṇe अकारिakāri |

अविष्टंaviṣṭaṃ धियोdhiyo जिग्र्तमjighṛtam पुरंधीरpuraṃdhīr जजस्तमjajastam अर्योaryo वनुषामvanuṣām अरातीःarātīḥ ||

This, Brahmaṇaspati, is your laudation prayer hath been made to thunderwielding Indra.
Favour our songs, wake up our thought and spirit: destroy the godless and our foemen's malice.
7.97.9

बर्हस्पतेbṛhaspate युवमyuvam इन्द्रशindraś चca वस्वोvasvo दिव्यस्येशाथेdivyasyeśāthe उतuta पार्थिवस्यpārthivasya |

धत्तंdhattaṃ रयिंrayiṃ सतुवतेstuvate कीरयेkīraye चिदcid यूयमyūyam पातpāta सवस्तिभिःsvastibhiḥ सदाsadā नःnaḥ ||

Ye Twain are Lords of wealth in earth and heaven, thou, O Bṛhaspati, and thou, O Indra.
Mean though he be, give wealth to him who lauds you. Preserve us evermore, ye Gods, with blessings.
