HYMN XIV. INDRA.


यदिन्द्राहंyadindrāhaṃ यथाyathā तवमीशीयtvamīśīya वस्वvasva एकeka इतit |

सतोताstotā मेगोषखाmeghoṣakhā सयातsyāt ||

IF I, O Indra, were, like thee, the single Sovran of all wealth,
My worshipper should be rich in kine.
8.14.1

शिक्षेयमस्मैśikṣeyamasmai दित्सेयंditseyaṃ शचीपतेśacīpate मनीषिणेmanīṣiṇe |

यदहंyadahaṃ गोपतिःghopatiḥ सयामsyām ||

I should be fain, O Lord of Power, to strengthen and enrich the sage,
Were I the Lord of herds of kine.
8.14.2

धेनुषdhenuṣ टṭa इन्द्रindra सून्र्ताsūnṛtā यजमानायyajamānāya सुन्वतेsunvate |

गामश्वंghāmaśvaṃ पिप्युषीpipyuṣī दुहेduhe ||

To worshippers who press the juice thy goodness, Indra, is a cow
Yielding in plenty kine and steeds.
8.14.3

नna तेte वर्तास्तिvartāsti राधसrādhasa इन्द्रindra देवोdevo नna मर्त्यःmartyaḥ |

यदyad दित्ससिस्तुतोditsasistuto मघमmagham ||

None is there, Indra, God or man, to hinder thy munificence,
The wealth which, lauded, thou wilt give.
8.14.4

यज्ञyajña इन्द्रमवर्धयदindramavardhayad यदyad भूमिंbhūmiṃ वयवर्तयतvyavartayat |

चक्राणcakrāṇa ओपशंopaśaṃ दिविdivi ||

The sacrifice made Indra strong when he unrolled the earth, and made
Himself a diadem in heaven.
8.14.5

वाव्र्धानस्यvāvṛdhānasya तेte वयंvayaṃ विश्वाviśvā धनानिdhanāni जिग्युषःjighyuṣaḥ |

ऊतिमिन्द्राūtimindrā वर्णीमहेvṛṇīmahe ||

Thine aid we claim, O Indra, thine who after thou hast waxen great
Hast won all treasures for thine own.
8.14.6

वयन्तरिक्षमतिरनvyantarikṣamatiran मदेmade सोमस्यsomasya रोचनाrocanā |

इन्द्रोindro यदभिनद्वलमyadabhinadvalam ||

In Soma's ecstasy Indra spread the firmament and realms of light,
When he cleft Vala limb from limb.
8.14.7

उदud गाghā आजदङगिरोभ्यājadaṅghirobhya आविषāviṣ कर्ण्वनkṛṇvan गुहाghuhā सतीःsatīḥ |

अर्वाञ्चंarvāñcaṃ नुनुदेnunude वलमvalam ||

Showing the hidden he drave forth the cows for the Aṅgirases,
And Vala he cast headlong down.
8.14.8

इन्द्रेणindreṇa रोचनाrocanā दिवोdivo दर्ळ्हानिdṛḷhāni दरंहितानिdṛṃhitāni चca |

सथिराणिsthirāṇi नपराणुदेnaparāṇude ||

By Indra were the lumirious realms of heaven established and secured,
Firm and immovable from their place.
8.14.9

अपामूर्मिर्मदन्निवapāmūrmirmadanniva सतोमstoma इन्द्राजिरायतेindrājirāyate |

विvi तेte मदाmadā अराजिषुःarājiṣuḥ ||

Indra, thy laud moves quickly like a joyous wave of water-floods:
Bright shine the drops that gladden thee.
8.14.10

तवंtvaṃ हिhi सतोमवर्धनstomavardhana इन्द्रास्युक्थवर्धनःindrāsyukthavardhanaḥ |

सतोतॄणामुतstotṝṇāmuta भद्रक्र्तbhadrakṛt ||

For thou, O Indra, art the God whom hymns and praises magnify:
Thou blessest those who worship thee.
8.14.11

इन्द्रमितindramit केशिनाkeśinā हरीharī सोमपेयायsomapeyāya वक्षतःvakṣataḥ |

उपupa यज्ञंसुराधसमyajñaṃsurādhasam ||

Let the two long-maned Bay Steeds bring Indra to drink the Soma juice,
The Bountiful to our sacrifice.
8.14.12

अपांapāṃ फेनेनphenena नमुचेःnamuceḥ शिरśira इन्द्रोदवर्तयःindrodavartayaḥ |

विश्वाviśvā यदजयःyadajayaḥ सप्र्धःspṛdhaḥ ||

With waters' foam thou torest off, Indra, the head of Namuci,
Subduing all contending hosts.
8.14.13

मायाभिरुत्सिस्र्प्सतmāyābhirutsisṛpsata इन्द्रindra दयामारुरुक्षतःdyāmārurukṣataḥ |

अवava दस्यून्रधूनुथाःdasyūnradhūnuthāḥ ||

The Dasyus, when they fain would climb
by magic arts and mount to heaven,
Thou, Indra, castest down to earth.
8.14.14

असुन्वामिन्द्रasunvāmindra संसदंsaṃsadaṃ विषूचींviṣūcīṃ वयनाशयःvyanāśayaḥ |

सोमपाsomapā उत्तरोuttaro भवनbhavan ||

As Soma-drinker conquering all, thou scatteredst to every side
Their settlement who poured no gifts.
