HYMN XV. INDRA.


तंtaṃ वभिvabhi परpra गायतghāyata पुरुहूतंpuruhūtaṃ पुरुष्टुतमpuruṣṭutam |

इन्द्रंindraṃ गीर्भिस्तविषमाghīrbhistaviṣamā विवासतvivāsata ||

SING forth to him whom many men invoke, to him whom many laud.
Invite the powerful Indra with your songs of praise.
8.15.1

यस्यyasya दविबर्हसोdvibarhaso बर्हतbṛhat सहोsaho दाधारdādhāra रोदसीrodasī |

गिरीन्रज्रानपःghirīnrajrānapaḥ सवर्व्र्षत्वनाsvarvṛṣatvanā ||

Whose lofty might-for doubly strong is he-supports the heavens and earth,
And hills and plains and floods and light with manly power.
8.15.2

सsa राजसिrājasi पुरुष्टुतpuruṣṭuta एकोeko वर्त्राणिvṛtrāṇi जिघ्नसेjighnase |

इन्द्रindra जैत्राjaitrā शरवस्याśravasyā चca यन्तवेyantave ||

Such, Praised by many! thou art King alone thou smitest Vṛtras dead,
To gain, O Indra, spoils of war and high renown.
8.15.3

तंtaṃ तेte मदंmadaṃ गर्णीमसिghṛṇīmasi वर्षणंvṛṣaṇaṃ पर्त्सुpṛtsu सासहिमsāsahim |

उu लोकक्र्त्नुमद्रिवोlokakṛtnumadrivo हरिश्रियमhariśriyam ||

We sing this strong and wild delight of thine which conquers in the fray,
Which, Caster of the Stone! gives room and shines like gold.
8.15.4

येनyena जयोतींष्यायवेjyotīṃṣyāyave मनवेmanave चca विवेदिथviveditha |

मन्दानोmandāno अस्यasya बर्हिषोbarhiṣo विvi राजसिrājasi ||

Wherewith thou also foundest lights for Āyu and for Manu's sake:
Now joying in this sacred grass thou beamest forth.
8.15.5

तदद्याtadadyā चितcit तta उक्थिनो.अनुukthino.anu षटुवन्तिṣṭuvanti पूर्वथाpūrvathā |

वर्षपत्नीरपोvṛṣapatnīrapo जयाjayā दिवे-दिवेdive-dive ||

This day too singers of the hymn praise, as of old, this might of thine:
Win thou the waters day by day, thralls of the strong.
8.15.6

तवtava तयदिन्द्रियंtyadindriyaṃ बर्हतbṛhat तवtava शुष्ममुतśuṣmamuta करतुमkratum |

वज्रंvajraṃ शिशातिśiśāti धिषणाdhiṣaṇā वरेण्यमvareṇyam ||

That lofty Indra-power of thine, thy strength and thine intelligence,
Thy thunderbolt for which we long, the wish makes keen.
8.15.7

तवtava दयौरिन्द्रdyaurindra पौंस्यंpauṃsyaṃ पर्थिवीpṛthivī वर्धतिvardhati शरवःśravaḥ |

तवामापःtvāmāpaḥ पर्वतासश्चparvatāsaśca हिन्विरेhinvire ||

O Indra, Heaven and Earth augment thy manly power and thy renown;
The waters and thy mountains stir and urge thee on.
8.15.8

तवांtvāṃ विष्णुर्ब्र्हनviṣṇurbṛhan कषयोkṣayo मित्रोmitro गर्णातिghṛṇāti वरुणःvaruṇaḥ |

तवांशर्धोtvāṃśardho मदत्यनुmadatyanu मारुतमmārutam ||

Viṣṇu the lofty ruling Power, Varuṇa, Mitra sing thy praise:
In thee the Marut3' company have great delight.
8.15.9

तवंtvaṃ वर्षाvṛṣā जनानांjanānāṃ मंहिष्ठmaṃhiṣṭha इन्द्रindra जज्ञिषेjajñiṣe |

सत्राsatrā विश्वाviśvā सवपत्यानिsvapatyāni दधिषेdadhiṣe ||

O Indra, thou wast born the Lord of men, most liberal of thy gifts:
Excellent deeds for evermore are all thine own.
8.15.10

सत्राsatrā तवंtvaṃ पुरुष्टुतpuruṣṭuta एकोeko वर्त्राणिvṛtrāṇi तोशसेtośase |

नान्यnānya इन्द्रात्करणंindrātkaraṇaṃ भूयbhūya इन्वतिinvati ||

Ever, alone, O highly-praised, thou sendest Vṛtras to their rest:
None else than Indra executes the mighty deed.
8.15.11

यदिन्द्रyadindra मन्मशस्त्वाmanmaśastvā नानाnānā हवन्तhavanta ऊतयेūtaye |

अस्माकेभिर्न्र्भिरत्राasmākebhirnṛbhiratrā सवर्जयsvarjaya ||

Though here and there, in varied hymns, Indra, men call on thee for aid,
Still with our heroes fight and win the light of heaven.
8.15.12

अरंaraṃ कषयायkṣayāya नोno महेmahe विश्वाviśvā रूपाण्याविशनrūpāṇyāviśan |

इन्द्रंindraṃ जैत्रायjaitrāya हर्षयाharṣayā शचीपतिमśacīpatim ||

Already have all forms of him entered our spacious dwelling-place:
For victory stir thou Indra, up, the Lord of Might.
