HYMN XLIV. AGNI.


समिधाग्निंsamidhāghniṃ दुवस्यतduvasyata घर्तैर्बोधयतातिथिमghṛtairbodhayatātithim |

आस्मिनāsmin हव्याजुहोतनhavyājuhotana ||

PAY service unto Agni with your fuel, rouse your Guest with oil:
In him present your offerings.
8.44.1

अग्नेaghne सतोमंstomaṃ जुषस्वjuṣasva मेme वर्धस्वानेनvardhasvānena मन्मनाmanmanā |

परतिprati सूक्तानिsūktāni हर्यharya नःnaḥ ||

Agni, do thou accept my laud, be magnified by this my song:
Welcome my sweetly-spoken words.
8.44.2

अग्निंaghniṃ दूतंdūtaṃ पुरोpuro दधेdadhe हव्यवाहमुपhavyavāhamupa बरुवेbruve |

देवानाdevānā सादयादिहsādayādiha ||

Agni, envoy, I place in front; the oblation-bearer I address:
Here let him seat the Deities.
8.44.3

उतut तेte बर्हन्तोbṛhanto अर्चयःarcayaḥ समिधानस्यsamidhānasya दीदिवःdīdivaḥ |

अग्नेaghne शुक्रासीरतेśukrāsaīrate ||

Agni, the lofty flames of thee enkindled have gone up on high,
Thy bright flames, thou Refulgent One.
8.44.4

उपupa तवाtvā जुह्वोjuhvo ममmama घर्ताचीर्यन्तुghṛtācīryantu हर्यतharyata |

अग्नेaghne हव्याhavyā जुषस्वjuṣasva नःnaḥ ||

Beloved! let my ladles full of sacred oil come near to thee:
Agni, accept our offerings.
8.44.5

मन्द्रंmandraṃ होतारंhotāraṃ रत्विजंṛtvijaṃ चित्रभानुंcitrabhānuṃ विभावसुमvibhāvasum |

अग्निमीळेaghnimīḷe सsa उu शरवतśravat ||

I worship Agni—may he hear!—the cheerful, the Invoker, Priest,
Of varied splendour, rich in light.
8.44.6

परत्नंpratnaṃ होतारमीड्यंhotāramīḍyaṃ जुष्टमग्निंjuṣṭamaghniṃ कविक्रतुमkavikratum |

अध्वराणामभिश्रियमadhvarāṇāmabhiśriyam ||

Ancient Invoker, meet for praise, beloved Agni, wise and strong,
The visitant of solemn rites.
8.44.7

जुषानोjuṣāno अङगिरस्तमेमाaṅghirastamemā हव्यान्यानुषकhavyānyānuṣak |

अग्नेaghne यज्ञंyajñaṃ नयर्तुथाnayaṛtuthā ||

Agni, best Aṅgiras, accept straightway these offerings, and guide
The seasonable sacrifice.
8.44.8

समिधानsamidhāna उu सन्त्यsantya शुक्रशोचśukraśoca इहाihā वहvaha |

चिकित्वानcikitvān दैव्यंdaivyaṃ जनमjanam ||

Excellent God, with brilliant flames, enkindled bring thou hitherward,
Knowing the way, the Heavenly Host.
8.44.9

विप्रंvipraṃ होतारमद्रुहंhotāramadruhaṃ धूमकेतुंdhūmaketuṃ विभावसुमvibhāvasum |

यज्ञानांyajñānāṃ केतुमीमहेketumīmahe ||

Him, Sage and Herald, void of guile, ensign of sacrifices, him
Smoke-bannered, rich in light, we seek.
8.44.10

अग्नेaghne निni पाहिpāhi नस्त्वंnastvaṃ परतिprati षमṣma देवdeva रीषतःrīṣataḥ |

भिन्धिbhindhi दवेषःdveṣaḥ सहस्क्र्तsahaskṛta ||

O Agni, be our Guardian thou, God, against those who injure us:
Destroy our foes, thou Son of Strength.
8.44.11

अग्निःaghniḥ परत्नेनpratnena मन्मनाmanmanā शुम्भानस्तन्वंśumbhānastanvaṃ सवामsvām |

कविर्विप्रेणkavirvipreṇa वाव्र्धेvāvṛdhe ||

Making his body beautiful, Agni the Sage hath waxen by
The singer and his ancient hymn.
8.44.12

ऊर्जोūrjo नपातमाnapātamā हुवे.अग्निंhuve.aghniṃ पावकशोचिषमpāvakaśociṣam |

अस्मिनasmin यज्ञेyajñe सवध्वरेsvadhvare ||

I invocate the Child of Strength, Agni with purifying flame,
At this well-ordered sacrifice.
8.44.13

सsa नोno मित्रमहस्त्वमग्नेmitramahastvamaghne शुक्रेणśukreṇa सोचिषाsociṣā |

देवैराdevairā सत्सिबर्हिषिsatsibarhiṣi ||

So Agni, rich in many friends, with fiery splendour, seat thyself
With Gods upon our sacred grass.
8.44.14

योyo अग्निंaghniṃ तन्वोtanvo दमेdame देवंdevaṃ मर्तःmartaḥ सपर्यतिsaparyati |

तस्माtasmā इदid दीदयदdīdayad वसुvasu ||

The mortal man who serves the God Agni within his own abode,
For him he causes wealth to shine.
8.44.15

अग्निर्मूर्धाaghnirmūrdhā दिवःdivaḥ ककुतkakut पतिःpatiḥ पर्थिव्याpṛthivyā अयमayam |

अपांapāṃ रेतांसिretāṃsi जिन्वतिjinvati ||

Agni is head and height of heaven, the Master of the earth is he:
He quickeneth the waters’ seed.
8.44.16

उदग्नेudaghne शुचयस्तवśucayastava शुक्राśukrā भराजन्तbhrājanta ईरतेīrate |

तवtava जयोतींष्यर्चयःjyotīṃṣyarcayaḥ ||

Upward, O Agni, rise thy flames, pure and resplendent, blazing high,
Thy lustres, fair effulgences.
8.44.17

ईषिषेīṣiṣe वार्यस्यvāryasya हिhi दात्रस्याग्नेdātrasyāghne सवर्पतिःsvarpatiḥ |

सतोताstotā सयांsyāṃ तवtava शर्मणिśarmaṇi ||

For, Agni, thou as Lord of Light rulest o’er choicest gifts: may I,
Thy singer, find defence in thee.
8.44.18

तवामग्नेtvāmaghne मनीषिणस्त्वांmanīṣiṇastvāṃ हिन्वन्तिhinvanti चित्तिभिःcittibhiḥ |

तवांtvāṃ वर्धन्तुvardhantu नोno गिरःghiraḥ ||

O Agni, they who understand stir thee to action with their thoughts:
So let our songs enhance thy might.
8.44.19

अदब्धस्यadabdhasya सवधावतोsvadhāvato दूतस्यdūtasya रेभतःrebhataḥ सदाsadā |

अग्नेःaghneḥ सख्यंsakhyaṃ वर्णीमहेvṛṇīmahe ||

We ever claim the friendship of Agni, the singing messenger,
Of God-like nature, void of guile.
8.44.20

अग्निःaghniḥ शुचिव्रततमःśucivratatamaḥ शुचिर्विप्रःśucirvipraḥ शुचिःśuciḥ कविःkaviḥ |

शुचीरोचतśucīrocata आहुतःāhutaḥ ||

Agni who bears most holy sway, the holy Singer, holy Sage,
Shines holy when we worship him.
8.44.21

उतuta तवाtvā धीतयोdhītayo ममmama गिरोghiro वर्धन्तुvardhantu विश्वहाviśvahā |

अग्नेaghne सख्यस्यsakhyasya बोधिbodhi नःnaḥ ||

Yea, let my meditations, let my songs exalt thee evermore.
Think, Agni, of our friendly bond,
8.44.22

यदग्नेyadaghne सयामहंsyāmahaṃ तवंtvaṃ तवंtvaṃ वाvā घाghā सयाsyā अहमaham |

सयुषsyuṣ टेṭe सत्याsatyā इहाशिषःihāśiṣaḥ ||

If I were thou and thou wert I, O Agni, every prayer of thine
Should have its due fulfilment here.
8.44.23

वसुर्वसुपतिर्हिvasurvasupatirhi कमस्यग्नेkamasyaghne विभावसुःvibhāvasuḥ |

सयामsyāma तेte सुमतावपिsumatāvapi ||

For Excellent and Lord of wealth. art thou O Agni, rich in light:
May we enjoy thy favouring grace.
8.44.24

अग्नेaghne धर्तव्रतायdhṛtavratāya तेte समुद्रायेवsamudrāyeva सिन्धवःsindhavaḥ |

गिरोghiro वाश्रासीरतेvāśrāsaīrate ||

Agni, to thee whose laws stand fast our resonant songs of praise speed forth,
As rivers hasten to the sea.
8.44.25

युवानंyuvānaṃ विश्पतिंviśpatiṃ कविंkaviṃ विश्वादंviśvādaṃ पुरुवेपसमpuruvepasam |

अग्निंaghniṃ शुम्भामिśumbhāmi मन्मभिःmanmabhiḥ ||

Agni, the Youthful Lord of men, who stirreth much and eateth all,
The Sage, I glorify with hymns.
8.44.26

यज्ञानांyajñānāṃ रथ्येrathye वयंvayaṃ तिग्मजम्भायtighmajambhāya वीळवेvīḷave |

सतोमैरिषेमाग्नयेstomairiṣemāghnaye ||

To Agni let us haste with lauds, the Guide of sacrificial rites,
Armed with sharp teeth, the Mighty One.
8.44.27

अयमग्नेayamaghne तवेtve अपिapi जरिताjaritā भूतुbhūtu सन्त्यsantya |

तस्मैtasmai पावकpāvaka मर्ळयmṛḷaya ||

And let this man, good Agni, be with thee the singer of thy praise:
Be gracious, Holy One, to him.
8.44.28

धीरोdhīro हयस्यद्मसदhyasyadmasad विप्रोvipro नna जाग्र्विःjāghṛviḥ सदाsadā |

अग्नेaghne दीदयसिdīdayasi दयविdyavi ||

For thou art sharer of our feast, wise, ever watchful as a Sage:
Agni, thou shinest in the sky.
8.44.29

पुराग्नेpurāghne दुरितेभ्यःduritebhyaḥ पुराpurā मर्ध्रेभ्यःmṛdhrebhyaḥ कवेkave |

परpra णṇa आयुर्वसोāyurvaso तिरtira ||

O Agni, Sage, before our foes, before misfortunes fall on us,
Excellent Lord, prolong our lives.
