HYMN LI. INDRA.


यथाyathā मनौmanau सांवरणौsāṃvaraṇau सोममिन्द्रापिबःsomamindrāpibaḥ सुतमsutam |

नीपातिथौnīpātithau मघवनmaghavan मेध्यातिथौmedhyātithau पुष्टिगौpuṣṭighau शरुष्टिगौśruṣṭighau सचाsacā ||

OFFER ye up as praise to him that wherein Indra takes delight.
The Soma-bringers magnify Indra's great energy with hymns. Good are the gifts that Indra gives.
8.51.1

पार्षद्वाणःpārṣadvāṇaḥ परस्कण्वंpraskaṇvaṃ समसादयच्छयानंsamasādayacchayānaṃ जिव्रिमुद्धितमjivrimuddhitam |

सहस्राण्यसिषासदsahasrāṇyasiṣāsad गवांghavāṃ रषिस्त्वोतोṛṣistvoto दस्यवेdasyave वर्कःvṛkaḥ ||

Sole among chiefs, companionless, impetuous, and peerless, he
Hath waxen great o’er many folk, yea., over all things born, in might.
8.51.2

यya उक्थेभिर्नukthebhirna विन्धतेvindhate चिकिदcikid यya रषिचोदनःṛṣicodanaḥ |

इन्द्रंindraṃ तमछाtamachā वदvada नव्यस्याnavyasyā मत्यरिष्यन्तंmatyariṣyantaṃ नna भोजसेbhojase ||

Lord of swift bounty, he will win e’en with a steed of worthless sort.
This, Indra, must be told of thee who wilt perform heroic deeds.
8.51.3

यस्माyasmā अर्कंarkaṃ सप्तशीर्षाणमान्र्चुस्त्रिधातुमुत्तमेsaptaśīrṣāṇamānṛcustridhātumuttame पदेpade |

सsa तविमाtvimā विश्वाviśvā भुवनानिbhuvanāni चिक्रददादिज्जनिष्टcikradadādijjaniṣṭa पौंस्यमpauṃsyam ||

Come to us hither: let us pay devotions that enhance thy might,
For which, Most Potent! thou wouldst fain bless the man here who strives for fame.
8.51.4

योyo नोno दाताdātā वसूनामिन्द्रंvasūnāmindraṃ तंtaṃ हूमहेhūmahe वयमvayam |

विद्माvidmā हयस्यhyasya सुमतिंsumatiṃ नवीयसींnavīyasīṃ गमेमghamema गोमतिghomati वरजेvraje ||

For thou, O Indra, makest yet more bold the spirit of the bold
Who with strong Soma serveth thee, still ready with his reverent prayers.
8.51.5

यस्मैyasmai तवंtvaṃ वसोvaso दानायdānāya शिक्षसिśikṣasi सsa रायसrāyas पोषमश्नुतेpoṣamaśnute |

तंtaṃ तवाtvā वयंvayaṃ मघवन्निन्द्रmaghavannindra गिर्वणःghirvaṇaḥ सुतावन्तोsutāvanto हवामहेhavāmahe ||

Worthy of song, he looketh down as a man looketh into wells.
Pleased with the Soma-bringer's skill he maketh him his mate and friend.
8.51.6

कदाkadā चनcana सतरीरसिstarīrasi नेन्द्रnendra सश्चसिsaścasi दाशुषेdāśuṣe |

उपोपेनupopen नुnu मघवनmaghavan भूयbhūya इनin नुnu तेte दानंdānaṃ देवस्यdevasya पर्च्यतेpṛcyate ||

In strength and wisdom all the Gods, Indra, have yielded unto thee.
Be thou the Guard of all, O thou whom many praise.
8.51.7

परpra योyo ननक्षेnanakṣe अभ्योजसाabhyojasā करिविंkriviṃ वधैःvadhaiḥ शुष्णंśuṣṇaṃ निघोषयनnighoṣayan |

यदेदस्तम्भीतyadedastambhīt परथयन्नमूंprathayannamūṃ दिवमादिज्जनिष्टdivamādijjaniṣṭa पार्थिवःpārthivaḥ ||

Praised, Indra, is this might of thine, best for the service of the Gods,
That thou with power dost slay Vṛtra, O Lord of Strength.
8.51.8

यस्यायंyasyāyaṃ विश्वviśva आर्योāryo दासःdāsaḥ शेवधिपाśevadhipā अरिःariḥ |

तिरश्चिदर्येtiraścidarye रुशमेruśame परीरविparīravi तुभ्येतtubhyet सोso अज्यतेajyate रयिःrayiḥ ||

He makes the races of mankind like synods of the Beauteous One.
Indra knows this his manifest deed, and is renowned.
8.51.9

तुरण्यवोturaṇyavo मधुमन्तंmadhumantaṃ घर्तश्चुतंghṛtaścutaṃ विप्रासोviprāso अर्कमान्र्चुःarkamānṛcuḥ |

अस्मेasme रयिःrayiḥ पप्रथेpaprathe वर्ष्ण्यंvṛṣṇyaṃ शवो.अस्मेśavo.asme सुवानासsuvānāsa इन्दवःindavaḥ ||

Thy might, O Indra, at its birth, thee also, and thy mental power,
In thy care, Maghavan rich in kine! they have increased exceedingly.
