HYMN LXI. SOMA PAVAMANA.


अयाayā वीतीvītī परिpari सरवsrava यस्तyasta इन्दोindo मदेष्वाmadeṣvā |

अवाहनavāhan नवतीर्नवnavatīrnava ||

FLOW onward, Indu, with this food for him who in thy wild delight
Battered the nine-and-ninety down,
9.61.1

पुरःpuraḥ सद्यsadya इत्थाधियेitthādhiye दिवोदासायdivodāsāya शम्बरमśambaram |

अधadha तयंtyaṃ तुर्वशंturvaśaṃ यदुमyadum ||

Smote swiftly forts, and gambara, then Yadu and that Turvaga,
For pious Divodāsa's sake.
9.61.2

परिpari णोṇo अश्वमश्वविदaśvamaśvavid गोमदिन्दोghomadindo हिरण्यवतhiraṇyavat |

कषराkṣarā सहस्रिणीरिषःsahasriṇīriṣaḥ ||

Finder of horses, pour on us horses and
wealth in kine and gold,
And, Indu, food in boundless store.
9.61.3

पवमानस्यpavamānasya तेte वयंvayaṃ पवित्रमभ्युन्दतःpavitramabhyundataḥ |

सखित्वमाsakhitvamā वर्णीमहेvṛṇīmahe ||

We seek to win thy friendly love, even Pavamana's flowing o’er
The limit of the cleansing sieve.
9.61.4

येye तेte पवित्रमूर्मयो.अभिक्षरन्तिpavitramūrmayo.abhikṣaranti धारयाdhārayā |

तेभिर्नःtebhirnaḥ सोमsoma मर्ळयmṛḷaya ||

With those same waves which in their stream oyerflow the purifying sieve,
Soma; be gracious unto us.
9.61.5

सsa नःnaḥ पुनानpunāna आā भरbhara रयिंrayiṃ वीरवतीमिषमvīravatīmiṣam |

ईशानःसोमīśānaḥsoma विश्वतःviśvataḥ ||

O Soma, being purified, bring us from all sides,—for thou canst,—
Riches and food with hero sons.
9.61.6

एतमुetamu तयंtyaṃ दशdaśa कषिपोkṣipo मर्जन्तिmṛjanti सिन्धुमातरमsindhumātaram |

समादित्येभिरख्यतsamādityebhirakhyata ||

Him here, the Child whom streams have borne, the ten swift fingers beautify
With the Ādityas is he seen.
9.61.7

समिन्द्रेणोतsamindreṇota वायुनाvāyunā सुतsuta एतिeti पवित्रpavitra आā |

संsaṃ सूर्यस्यरश्मिभिःsūryasyaraśmibhiḥ ||

With Indra and with Vāyu he, effused, flows onward with,the beams
Of Sūrya to the cleansing sieve.
9.61.8

सsa नोno भगायbhaghāya वायवेvāyave पूष्णेpūṣṇe पवस्वpavasva मधुमानmadhumān |

चारुर्मित्रेcārurmitre वरुणेvaruṇe चca ||

Flow rich in sweets and lovely for our Bhaga, Vāyu, Pūṣan flow
For Mitra and for Varuṇa.
9.61.9

उच्चाuccā तेte जातमन्धसोjātamandhaso दिविdivi षदṣad भूम्याbhūmyā ददेdade |

उग्रंughraṃ शर्मśarma महिmahi शरवःśravaḥ ||

High is thy juice's birth: though set in heaven, on earth it hath obtained
Strong sheltering power and great renown.
9.61.10

एनाenā विश्वान्यर्यviśvānyarya आā दयुम्नानिdyumnāni मानुषाणामmānuṣāṇām |

सिषासन्तोsiṣāsanto वनामहेvanāmahe ||

Striving to win, with him we gain all wealth from the ungodly man,
Yea, all the glories of mankind.
9.61.11

सsa नna इन्द्रायindrāya यज्यवेyajyave वरुणायvaruṇāya मरुद्भ्यःmarudbhyaḥ |

वरिवोवितvarivovit परिस्रवparisrava ||

Finder of room and freedom, flow for Indra whom we must adore,
For Varuṇa and the Marut host.
9.61.12

उपोupo षुṣu जातमप्तुरंjātamapturaṃ गोभिर्भङगंghobhirbhaṅghaṃ परिष्क्र्तमpariṣkṛtam |

इन्दुंinduṃ देवाdevā अयासिषुःayāsiṣuḥ ||

The Gods have come to Indu well-descended, beautified with milk,
The active crusher of the foe.
9.61.13

तमिदtamid वर्धन्तुvardhantu नोno गिरोghiro वत्संvatsaṃ संशिश्वरीरिवsaṃśiśvarīriva |

यya इन्द्रस्यindrasya हर्दंसनिःhṛdaṃsaniḥ ||

Even as mother cows their calf, so let our praise-songs strengthen him,
Yea, him who winneth Indra's heart.
9.61.14

अर्षाarṣā णःṇaḥ सोमsoma शंśaṃ गवेghave धुक्षस्वdhukṣasva पिप्युषीमिषमpipyuṣīmiṣam |

वर्धाvardhā समुद्रमुक्थ्यमsamudramukthyam ||

Soma, pour blessings on our kine, pour forth the food that streams with milk
Increase the sea that merits laud.
9.61.15

पवमानोpavamāno अजीजनदajījanad दिवश्चित्रंdivaścitraṃ नna तन्यतुमtanyatum |

जयोतिर्वैश्वानरंjyotirvaiśvānaraṃ बर्हतbṛhat ||

From heaven hath Pavamana made, as ’twere, the marvellous thunder, and
The lofty light of all mankind.
9.61.16

पवमानस्यpavamānasya तेte रसोraso मदोmado राजन्नदुछुनःrājannaduchunaḥ |

विvi वारमव्यमर्षतिvāramavyamarṣati ||

The gladdening and auspicious juice of thee, of Pavamana, King!
Flows o’er the woollen straining-cloth.
9.61.17

पवमानpavamāna रसस्तवrasastava दक्षोdakṣo विvi राजतिrājati दयुमानdyumān |

जयोतिर्विश्वंjyotirviśvaṃ सवर्द्र्शेsvardṛśe ||

Thy juice, O Pavamana, sends its rays abroad like splendid skill,
Like lustre, all heaven's light, to see.
9.61.18

यस्तेyaste मदोmado वरेण्यस्तेनाvareṇyastenā पवस्वान्धसाpavasvāndhasā |

देवावीरघशंसहाdevāvīraghaśaṃsahā ||

Flow onward with that juice of thine most excellent, that brings delight,
Slaying the wicked, dear to Gods.
9.61.19

जघ्निर्व्र्त्रममित्रियंjaghnirvṛtramamitriyaṃ सस्निर्वाजंsasnirvājaṃ दिवे-दिवेdive-dive |

गोषाghoṣā उu अश्वसाaśvasā असिasi ||

Killing the foeman and his hate, and winning booty every day,
Gainer art thou of steeds and kine.
9.61.20

सम्मिश्लोsammiślo अरुषोaruṣo भवbhava सूपस्थाभिर्नsūpasthābhirna धेनुभिःdhenubhiḥ |

सीदञ्छ्येनोsīdañchyeno नna योनिमाyonimā ||

Red-hued, be blended with the milk that seems to yield its lovely breast,
Falcon-like resting in thine home.
9.61.21

सsa पवस्वpavasva यya आविथेन्द्रंāvithendraṃ वर्त्रायvṛtrāya हन्तवेhantave |

वव्रिवांसंvavrivāṃsaṃ महीरपःmahīrapaḥ ||

Flow onward thou who strengthenedst Indra to slaughter Vṛtra who
Compassed and stayed the mighty floods.
9.61.22

सुवीरासोsuvīrāso वयंvayaṃ धनाdhanā जयेमjayema सोमsoma मीढ्वःmīḍhvaḥ |

पुनानोpunāno वर्धनोvardhano गिरःghiraḥ ||

Soma who rainest gifts, may we win riches with our hero sons:
Strengthen, as thou art cleansed, our hymns.
9.61.23

तवोतासस्तवावसाtvotāsastavāvasā सयामsyāma वन्वन्तvanvanta आमुरःāmuraḥ |

सोमsoma वरतेषुजाग्र्हिvrateṣujāghṛhi ||

Aided by thee, and through thy grace, may we be slayers when we war:
Watch, Soma, at our solemn rites.
9.61.24

अपघ्ननapaghnan पवतेpavate मर्धो.अपmṛdho.apa सोमोsomo अराव्णःarāvṇaḥ |

गछन्निन्द्रस्यghachannindrasya निष्क्र्तमniṣkṛtam ||

Chasing our foemen, driving off the godless, Soma flowcth on,
Going to Indra's special place.
9.61.25

महोmaho नोno रायrāya आā भरbhara पवमानpavamāna जहीjahī मर्धःmṛdhaḥ |

रास्वेन्दोrāsvendo वीरवदvīravad यशःyaśaḥ ||

O Pavamana, hither bring great riches, and destroy our foes:
O Indu, grant heroic fame.
9.61.26

नna तवाtvā शतंśataṃ चनcana हरुतोhruto राधोrādho दित्सन्तमाditsantamā मिननminan |

यतyat पुनानोpunāno मखस्यसेmakhasyase ||

A hundred obstacles have ne’er checked
thee when fain to give thy boons,
When, being cleansed, thou combatest.
9.61.27

पवस्वेन्दोpavasvendo वर्षाvṛṣā सुतःsutaḥ कर्धीkṛdhī नोno यशसोyaśaso जनेjane |

विश्वाviśvā अपद्विषोapadviṣo जहिjahi ||

Indu, flow on, a mighty juice; glorify us among the folk:
Drive all our enemies away.
9.61.28

अस्यasya तेte सख्येsakhye वयंvayaṃ तवेन्दोtavendo दयुम्नdyumna उत्तमेuttame |

सासह्यामsāsahyāma पर्तन्यतःpṛtanyataḥ ||

Indu, in this thy friendship most lofty and glorious may we
Subdue all those who war with us.
9.61.29

याyā तेte भीमान्यायुधाbhīmānyāyudhā तिग्मानिtighmāni सन्तिsanti धूर्वणेdhūrvaṇe |

रक्षाrakṣā समस्यsamasya नोno निदःnidaḥ ||

Those awful weapons that thou hast, sharpened at point to strike men down-
Guard us therewith from every foe.
